Penelitian ini berjudul “Tourette syndrome as motivation in holding dream in Front of the Class” ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis efek yang ditimbulkan oleh Tourett sindrome dalam kehidupan Brad Cohen dan bagaimana sindrom Tourett memotivasi Brad sebagai penderita Tourett dalam memoar Front of the Class. Metode analisis yang digunakan untuk menganalisis data dari novel Front of the Class karya Brad Cohen dan Lissa Wysocky dalam penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Sumber data dari penelitian ini di peroleh dari novel Front of the Class dan di analisis menggunakan teori motivational needs serta pendekatan psikologis. Ada beberapa tahap yang dilakukan untuk menganalisi novel untuk menjawab rumusan masalah. Tahap kedua adalah mencari data yang akan di analisis, dimana data tersebut berhubungan dengan sindrome Tourett and motivasi yang dimiliki oleh Brad Cohen dalam novel Front of the Class. Tahap ketiga dalam menganalisis sesuai dengan rumusan masalah yaitu efek yang di timbulkan oleh sindrom Tourett serta bagaimana Tourett memotivasi Brad Cohen sebagai penderita Tourett. Tahap keempat adalah menganalisis data dengan menghubungkan data tersebut dengan teori motivasi kebutuhan. Tahap terakhir adalah menyimpulkan. Sindrom Tourett menimbulkan beberapa efek negatif pada kehidupan Brad, yaitu Brad dikucilkan di sekolah, tidak mempunyai teman, mendapat penolakan ditempat umum, membuat Brad menjadi sosok yang intovet, membuat keluarga Brad bingung bersikap terhadapnya, dan Brad mendapat kesulitan dalam membaca dan memahami materi pelajarannya. Efek- efek yang di timbulkan tersebut menyulitkan Brad dalam kehidupanya, terutama kehidupan sosialnya. Disamping menimbulakn efek negatif sindrom Tourett memotivasi Brad untuk meraih mimpinya menjadi seorng guru yang hebat. Brad mempunya tiga motivasi kebutuhan, yaitu kebutuhan akan penerimaan, kebutuhan prestasi dan kebutuhan akan kekuatan dan wewenang. Brad sukses mengubah sindrom Tourett menjadi motivasi untuk menggapai impianya. |

This thesis entitled “Tourette syndrome as motivation in holding dream depicted in Front of the Class” is purposed to analyze the effects of Tourette syndrome in Brad Cohen’s life and how Tourette syndrome has motivated Brad Cohen as Touretter. In this research, descriptive qualitative method was used to analyze the data from the novel written by Brad Cohen with Lisa Wysocky entitled Front of the Class. The data source of this study is the memoir Front of the Class which was analyzed using motivational needs theories by David C. Mc Clelland and psychological approach. There were some steps done in this research. First was reading and understanding the plot of the novel. The second was finding data to be analyzed, related with Tourette syndrome and motivation. The third was analyzing the data dealing with the research questions about the effects of Tourette syndrome in Brad Cohen’s life and how Tourette syndrome motivated Brad as Touretter. The fourth was connecting the data with the theories (motivational needs theory). And the last step was making conclusion. As the result of the research, Tourette syndrome gives negative effects in Brad Cohen’s life: gets bullying in School, has no friends, gets refusal in public places, becomes an introvert person.His condition causes difficulty in reading and understanding the lesson, and confusion to his family in taking action. Besides those effects, Tourette syndrome motivates Brad Cohen in holding his dream based on David C. Mc Clelland’s motivational needs theory: the need for affiliation, the need for achievement and the need for authority and power. Brad success to change Tourette syndrome becomes motivation in holding his dream to be a great teacher. |
