| Abstrak (Bhs. Indonesia) | ABSTRAk Penelitian yang berjudul The Motive of Abbie Putnam’s Affair in Eugene O’Neill’s Play Entitled Desire under the Elms ini menganalisis tentang, motif perselingkuhan oleh Abbie Putnam dalam drama Desire under the Elms. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mencari motif perselingkuhan yang dijalani oleh Abbie Putnam, karakter utama wanita dalam drama Desire under the Elms yang ditulis oleh Eugene O’Neill. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode kualitatif. Data primer yang digunakan dalam penelitian diperoleh dari drama Desire under the Elms karya Eugene O’Neill, sedangkan data sekunder diambil dari sumber lain yang berkaitan dengan teori psikologi. Untuk menganalisis data-data tersebut, teori psikologi sastra, hirarki kebutuhan oleh Maslow dan konsep perselingkuhan digunakan sebagai teorinya . Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa ada dua kelompok motif perselingkuhan yang miliki Abbie Putnam dalam drama Desire under the Elms. Kelompok motif yang pertama adalah motif internal. Motif perselingkuhan ini muncul karana adanya permasalahn yang terjadi didalam hubungan pernikahan Abbie dengan suaminya, Ephraim. Motif-motif internal ini mencakup motif ketidakpuasan dan motif keamanan. Kelompok motif yang kedua adalah motif eksternal. Motif ini muncul karena pengaruh kehadiran Ebben dalam kehidupan Abbie. Motif eksternal ini mencakup motif cinta, motif kesamaan masa lalu dan motif penerimaan. |

Inggris) | ABSTRACT This research entitled The Motive of Abbie Putnam’s Affair in Eugene O’Neill’s Play Entitled Desire under the Elms, analyzes the motive of Abbie Putnam’s affair in Desire under the Elms play. The aim of this research is to find out the motives of Abbie Putnam’s affair in the Desire under the Elms play by Eugene O’Neill. Qualitative method was used in this research to analyze Desire under the Elms play as primary data, whereas the secondary data were taken from external sources related with the theory of psychology literature. To analyze those data, this research used psychology literature theory, Maslow’s Hierarchy theory and affair concept as tools. The result of this research shows that there are two kinds of affair motives by Abbie Putnam in Desire under the Elms play. The first is the intrinsic motives. This motive arises because of Abbie’s marriage problem with her husband, Ephraim Cabot. This motive includes dissatisfaction motive and safety motive. The second is the extrinsic motives. This motive arises because of Ebben’s presence in Abbie’s life. This motive includes love motive, similar background motive and acceptance motive. |
