| Abstrak (Bhs. Indonesia) | Penelitian berjudul “Hugo Cabret’s Struggle to Survive as a Child in Brian Selznick’s The Invention of Hugo Cabret.” menggunakan pendekatan psikologi sastra dengan metode kualitatif untuk menemukan perjuangan seorang anak bernama Hugo Cabret untuk bertahan hidup tanpa orang tua/pengasuhnya yang bertanggung jawab untuk memenuhi kebutuhan hidupnya. Dengan fokus terhadap kebutuhan serta hak anak-anak, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa Hugo tidak mendapatkan hak-haknya dari pengasuhnya, Claude Cabret. Hal tersebut dibuktikan dengan gagalnya Claude Cabret dalam memenuhi kebutuhan-kebutuhan hidup Hugo seperti kebutuhan dasar untuk hidup, kebutuhan akan rasa aman, kebutuhan akan kasih sayang dan kebutuhan untuk belajar. Kondisi tersebut membuat Hugo harus memulung makanan sisa, mencuri roti dan susu, mengambil pakaian dari tempat penitipan dan tinggal di stasiun kereta api untuk memenuhi kebutuhan dasarnya. Untuk melindungi dirinya supaya tidak tertangkap karena selama ini ia hidup sebagai gelandangan di stasiun kereta api, Hugo harus berusaha supaya tidak terlihat dari Madame Emile, Monsieur Frick dan Inspektur Stasiun. Selai itu, Hugo berteman dengan Isabelle dan Etienne untuk memenuhi kebutuhannya akan kasih sayang, cinta dan kebersamaan sehingga ia tidak merasakan kesepian. Terakhir, Hugo juga belajar tentang trik-trik sulap dan horology secara otodidak untuk memenuhi kebutuhannya akan belajar.

Inggris) | The research entitled “Hugo Cabret’s Struggle to Survive as a Child in Brian Selznick’s The Invention of Hugo Cabret.” employs psychology of literature approach along with qualitative method to find out the struggle of a child named Hugo Cabret to survive without his parent/caretaker fulfilling his needs. By focusing on the needs and rights of children, the findings show that Hugo does not get his rights fulfilled by his caretaker, Claude Cabret. It is proven by the failure of Claude Cabret to fulfill Hugo’s daily needs as a child such as basic needs, the need of safety, the need of affection and the need of study. This condition leads Hugo to scavenge some leftovers, stealing bread and milk, picking clothes from the lost and found counter and living at a railway station to fulfill his basic need. To protect himself from being caught as he lives alone at the railway station, Hugo has to remain invisible from Madame Emile, Monsieur Frick and the Station Inspector. Meanwhile, Hugo befriends with Isabelle and Etienne to fulfill his emotional need for affection, love and togetherness thus he does not feel lonely anymore. Lastly, Hugo learns about magic tricks and horology autodidactic to fulfill his need of study. |
