| Abstrak (Bhs. Indonesia) | Penelitian yang berjudul “The Portrayal of polygamy in Nigeria and Utah based on Novels: Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart and Ann Eliza Young’s Wife No. 19 (A Comparative Study)” bertujuan untuk mencari tahu persamaan dan perbedaan praktik poligami dalam novel : Things Fall Apart oleh Chinua Achebe and Wife No. 19 oleh Ann Eliza Young. Data utama dari penelitian ini adalah novel Things Fall Apart karya Chinua Achebe dan Wife No. 19 karya Ann Eliza Young yang dianalisis melalui masyarakat dan kehidupan rumah tangga. Selanjutnya, ilmu komparatif digunakan untuk menganalisis praktik poligami di kedua negeara, Nigeria dan Utah, yang digambarkan di dalam novel yang ditulis di abad 19 tersebut. Kemudian, analisis tersebut dijabarkan dengan menggunakan metode kualitatif. Hasil penelitian tersebut menunjukan bahwa pengarang menggambarkan praktik poligami berdasarkan persamaan dan perbedaan masyarakat dan kehidupan rumah tangga. Pengarang menggambarkan persamaan kehidupan masyarakat kedua negara tersebut melalui status pria dan jumlah istri, sedangkan persamaan kehidupan rumah tangganya berdasarkan istri yang taat, perlakuan suami pada istri yang tidak patuh, dan ketegaran para istri. Kemudian, perbedaan antara kedua masyarakat itu adalah agama yang dianut dan gaya hidup. Di samping itu, perbedaan kehidupan rumah tangga kedua negara tersebut dapat dilihat melalui tradisi pernikahan dan hubungan antar-istri. |

Inggris) | The research entitled “The Portrayal of polygamy in Nigeria and Utah based on Novels: Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart and Ann Eliza Young’s Wife No. 19 (A Comparative Study)” is aimed to find out the similarity and the difference of polygamy practice that happen in the novels: Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart and Ann Eliza Young’s Wife No. 19. The main data sources are novels Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe and Wife No. 19 by Ann Eliza Young which are analyzed through their societies and domestic affairs. Furthermore, comparative study was applied to analyze the practice of polygamy in Nigeria and Utah which were portrayed in the novels that were written in the 19th. Then, the analysis was presented by using qualitative method. The findings show that the authors portray the 19th polygamy practice through their similarities and differences. In the novels, the researcher finds that Nigeria and Utah societies are similar in men’s position and the numbers of wives while their domestic affairs are also similar in terms of the respectful wives, the husband’s physical treatments towards the disobedient wives, and the figure of strong wives. Moreover, both societies are different in their religions and their life style. In addition, their different domestic affairs are shown in the marriage tradition and the wives’ relationship. |
