| Abstrak (Bhs. Indonesia) | Penelitian yang berjudul “The Roles of Massachusetts’ 1692-1693 Church in Kathleen Kent’s The Heretic’s Daughter” bertujuan untuk mencari tahu bagaimana pengarang menjelaskan peran-peran gereja Massachusets pada tahun 1692-1693 dalam novel berjudul The Heretic’s Daughter karya Kathleen Kent. Data utama dari penelitian ini adalah novel The Heretic’s Daughter yang dianalisis melalui peran-peran utama yang dimiliki oleh gereja Massachusetts. Hasil penemuan tersebut menunjukkan bahwa pengarang menjelaskan peran-peran gereja Massachusetts melalui kemampuannya dalam membentuk konsep-konsep moralitas, menegakkan hukum, mengembangkan ekonomi masyarakat, dan membentuk peradilan Salem Witch Trials. Pengarang menjelaskan bahwa gereja memiliki peranan besar di bidang spiritual dan kemasyarakatan. Disamping menjadi satu-satunya institusi agama yang diakui oleh masyarakat, gereja Massachusetts juga diberikan kewenangan sebagai penegak hukum. Oleh karena itu, pada abad ke tujuh belas, agama dan aspek-aspek sosial tidak bisa dipisahkan di kehidupan masyarakat Massachusetts. |

Inggris) | The research entitled “The Roles of Massachusetts’ 1692-1693 Church in Kathleen Kent’s The Heretic’s Daughter” is aimed to find out how the author describes the roles of the Massachusetts 1692-1693 church in Kathleen Kent’s The Heretic’s Daughter. The primary source is novel The Heretic’s Daughter which is analyzed through the principle roles possessed by the Massachusetts church. The findings showed that the author described the roles of Massachusetts church through its power in constructing morality, enforcing justice, developing economy, and establishing of Salem Witch Trials. The author described the church played the great roles both in spiritual and public sphere. Besides becoming the only religion institution acknowledged by the people, the church was granted the privilege as the legal enforcers. Thus, the religion and social aspects could not be separated in the seventeenth century Massachusetts life. |
