| Abstrak (Bhs. Indonesia) | Penelitian ini mengkaji tentang nilai sosial dalam kehidupan religi dan kehidupan politik di New England pada masa Puritan. Pendekatan sosiologis diterapkan dalam menganalisa nilai social sebagai symbol dalam yang ada dalam cerita pendek. Metode dalam penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif yang mendeskripsikan fenomena nilai social pada masyarakat Puritan seperti yang tergambar dalam symbol dari karakter dan seting. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan kondisi masyarakat Puritan, terutama nilai sosialnya. Nilai sosial pertama adalah dalam kehidupan religi, yang ditunjukkan dalam karakter Young Goodman Brown dan istrinya Faith menggambarkan kondisi Puritan sebagai pendatang di New England yang ingin memurnikan agamanya, tetapi mereka menjadi orang-orang yang indiviadualistis. Nilai sosial kedua adalah dalam kehidupan politik yang ditunjukkan dalam karakter Old Man dan Staf serta lokasi Forest. Karakter tersebut merepresentasikan hasrat untuk kehidupan baru yang terpengaruh oleh unsur sosial, yang menggambarkan mengenai kondisi ekonomi dan politik masyarakat Puritan yang menjadi materialistis. |

| Abtrak (Bhs. Inggris) | This research studies about social value in religious life and in political life of New England society in Puritan era. The sociological approach is applied in analyzing the social value as symbolically portrayed in the short story. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative that describes the phenomenon of social value in Puritan people as portrayed in symbol of character and setting. The result of this research is about the condition of Puritan society, especially the social value. In this short story, The first social value is shown in the religious life, which is shown in the character of Young Goodman Brown and his wife Faith which portrays the social condition of Puritan people as new comers in New England that intend to purify their religious view, but they turn into individualistic person. The second is the social value in the political life that is shown in the character of Old Man and Staff. Both characters represent the temptation of the new life and the corrupted people in their society that portrays about the economic and political condition of Puritan society, which becomes materialistic. |
