Indonesia) | Karya sastra yang dibahas dalam penelitian ini adalah sebuah novel berjudul Snow Flower and The Secret Fan karya Lisa See yang mengangkat fenomena ketidaksetaraan gender yang terjadi di Cina pada abad 19. Novel tersebut menceritakan kehidupan wanita Cina diabad 19 yang menderita ketidaksetaraan gender yang diberikan oleh masyarakat mereka. Penelitian ini menerapkan teori gender yang dibawa oleh Ann Oakley dan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Teori-teori tersebut digunakan untuk mencari tahu apa saja bentuk ketidaksetaraan gender yang dialami wanita Cina diabad 19 dan bagaimana bketidaksetaraan gender itu bisa terjadi yang tergambarkan dalam novel Snow Flower and The Secret Fan. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa (1) Wanita Cina diabad 19 dianggap rendah dipengaruhi oleh Neo Confucianism, (2) Wanita Cina diabad 19 mengikuti tradisi foot binding guna memperoleh identitas diri mereka, (3) Pernikahan yang diatur oleh biro jodoh di Cina abad 19 merupakan bentuk kejahatan terhadap gender, (4) Pemilihan anak laki-laki dimasyarakat Cina abad 19 merupakan bukti penomor-duaan wanita Cina, (5) Nasib menyedihkan para janda di Cina abad 19 menjadi bukti bahwa wanita selalu dianggap rendah. |

Inggris) | The literary work discussed in this research is a novel entitled Smow Flower and The Secret Fan by Lisa See that has gender inequality phenomenon that existed in 19th century China as the theme. Snow Flower and The Secret Fan tells about the life of 19th century Chinese women that sufferred gender inequalities given by their society in every aspect of their lives. This research applied gender theory that is brought by Ann Oakley for analyzing the data with descriptive qualitative method. Those theories were applied to find out what the gender inequalities that sufferred by 19th century Chinese women and how it can be happened. The results of this research shows that (1) the inferiority of 19th century Chinese women influenced by Neo Confucianism, (2) Constructing the identity of Chinese women through foot binding tradition. The 19th century Chinese women had to follow the foot binding tradition in order to get their identity. (3) The traditional arranged marriage in 19th century China is a form of gender violence. (4) The sons preference in 19th century China is a proof of subordination to Chinese women. (5) The miserable fate of 19th century Chinese women that became widows. |
