Program Studi Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris, Jurusan Ilmu Budaya, Fakultas Ilmu Sosial danIlmu Politik, Universitas Jenderal Soedirman, Purwokerto. Tahun akademik 2013/2014. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan kohesi dan koherensi dari teks lisan pidato Lady Gaga yang berjudul ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ dan untuk menemukan implikasinya terhadap para penontonnya. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode kualitatif. Peneliti menggunakan teknik purposive sampling untuk mengambil data dengan proses menyeleksi data berdasarkan apa yang dibutuhkan dalam penelitian.Data pada penilitian ini adalah transkrip pidato Lady Gaga yang berjudul ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’, sementara sampel dari penelitian ini adalah beberapa kata atau frase sebagai piranti kohesi dan koherensi yang terdapat dalam transkrip pidato tersebut. Setelah melakukan analisis pada keseluruhan data, peneliti menemukan bahwa terdapat 674 piranti kohesi yang terdiri dari 298 grammatical cohesion devicesyang terdiri dari 84 (12%) definite articles, 16 (2.3%) demonstrative pronouns, 143 (21%) pronouns, 32 (4.7%) anaphorics, 2 (0.6%) cataphorics, and 19 (2.8%) esphorics. Untuk lexical cohesion devices, peneliti menemukan 1 (0.1%) co-hyponomy, 3 (0.4%) contrasts, 5 (0.7%) similarities, 282 (42%) repetition words, 3 (0.4%) meronymies, 5 (0.7%) expectancy relations. Co-meronymy dan class/sub-class tidak ditemukan dalam pidato. Sementara untuk conjunctive cohesion device, 3 (0.4%) elaborations, 53 (8%) extensions, and 23 (3.4%) enhancements ditemukan. Peneliti menemukan satu jenis koherensi dalam pidato Lady Gaga yang berjudul‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ yang disebut registerial coherence. Registerial coherence ini terdiri dari; Field: equality of gay in the US military, Tenor: a pop star to general audiences, Mode: written to be spoken, non-interactive face-to-face. Implikasi dari kohesi dan koherensi dalam pidato Lady Gaga yang berjudul ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ terhadap para penonton antara lain: pidatonya dipahami dengan baik oleh para penonton karena Lady Gaga menggunakan piranti kohesi gramatikal, leksikal, dan konjungtif yang benar yang menghasilkan sebuah wacana yang bagus sebagai satu kesatuan, pidato tersebut memberikan dorongan kepada para penonton untuk mendukung pencabutan kebijakan ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’, koherensi pidato tersebut diketahui oleh para penonton karena mereka mengetahui topik, bentuk bahasa, dan pembicara serta pendengarnya, para penonton bisa mendapatkan informasi dari pidato Lady Gaga dengan menunjukkan komentar-komentar. The aims of this research are to describe the cohesion and coherence of spoken text in Lady Gaga’s ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ Speech and to find out its implication towards the audiences. The method used in this research is qualitative method. The researcher used purposive sampling to take the sample in which the process of selecting sample based on the need of the research.The data of this research are the speech transcript of Lady Gaga speech entitled ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’, while the sample of this research are some words or phrases as the cohesion device and coherence in the speech transcript. After conducting the analysis, the researcher found that there are 674 cohesion devices that consist of 298 grammatical cohesion devices consisting of 84 (12%) definite articles, 16 (2.3%) demonstrative pronouns, 143 (21%) pronouns, 32 (4.7%) anaphorics, 2 (0.6%) cataphorics, and 19 (2.8%) esphorics. The implications of the cohesion and coherence in Lady Gaga’s speech entitled ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ towards the audiences are the speech is well understood by the audiences since Lady Gaga uses correct grammatical, lexical, and conjunctive cohesion devices which result in a good discourse as a whole,the speech gives encouragement to the audiences to support the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, the coherence of the speech is known by the audiences since they know the topic, the language form, and the speaker as well as the hearers, the audiences can get information from Lady Gaga’s speech by showing comments.
