Abtrak (Bhs. Inggris)Microplastics are among the pollutants commonly found in coastal areas and have the potential to accumulate in sediments and benthic organisms, such as blood cockles (Anadara granosa). This study aimed to analyze the characteristics of microplastics based on their shape, color, size, polymer type, and abundance in sediments and blood cockles at Prawean Beach, Jepara, as well as to compare the physical characteristics (shape and size) of microplastics between the two samples. The study employed a quantitative descriptive method, with sampling conducted at nine observation points. Microplastic identification was performed visually using a stereo microscope, while polymer identification was conducted using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The results showed that 216 microplastic particles were found in the sediments, dominated by fibers (50%), with red being the most dominant color (74 particles). The most abundant microplastic size was in the small size class (63.86–1771.82 µm), and the abundance indicated that sediments served as the primary site of microplastic accumulation at Prawean Beach. In blood cockles, 320 microplastic particles were found, also dominated by fibers, with red being the most dominant color (79 particles). The most abundant microplastic size was in the small size class (50–1245 µm), and the abundance indicated that blood cockles had been exposed to and accumulated microplastics from their surrounding environment. FTIR analysis identified six polymer types in the sediments and five polymer types in the blood cockles, with polypropylene (PP) detected in both sample types. The characteristics of microplastics in sediments and blood cockles showed relatively similar patterns in terms of shape, dominant color, particle size, and the presence of several polymer types.
