Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Jenderal Soedirman University, Faculty of Humanities, Department of Language Education, English Language Education Study Program, Purwokerto Mastering oral communication skills is essential for undergraduate students, yet students often question whether their internal confidence directly dictates their actual speaking performance. This study investigated the correlation between students’ self-efficacy and their oral communication scores among first-year undergraduate students in the English Education Study Program. Grounded in Bandura’s self-efficacy theory, the research examined how subjective self-belief relates to technical speaking performance in an academic setting. A quantitative correlational design was employed, involving 47 randomly selected participants who completed the adapted General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) questionnaire and undertook a speaking assessment in a Daily Conversation course. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Spearman Rank-Order Correlation test via SPSS 27. Firstly, descriptive statistical analysis revealed that the comprehensive mean score of self-efficacy calculated for the entire sample was 31.1277 with a standard deviation of 3.30755, which falls squarely within the high category. Secondly, the calculated cumulative mean score for the speaking performance across the entire sample was 80.2351, accompanied by a standard deviation of 2.84817, demonstrating that, on average, the first-year students in this cohort maintained a strongly positive, consistent performance throughout the semester. Thirdly, the statistical analysis revealed a non-significant correlation between students’ self-efficacy and their oral communication grades (r = -0.035, p > 0.05), leading to the retention of the null hypothesis. The scatter plot visually confirmed a random distribution of data points, highlighting a cognitive-linguistic mismatch between subjective confidence and actual proficiency. This outcome was primarily attributed to the strict criteria of the technical grading rubric and a statistical restriction of range within the sample. Consequently, the findings indicated that high self-efficacy does not automatically guarantee technical linguistic accuracy in formal speaking assessments.
