| Abstrak (Bhs. Indonesia) | Pertambahan jumlah penduduk akan meningkatkan kebutuhan air yang berdampak pada bertambahnya volume limbah cair domestik yang berpotensi mencemari badan perairan akibat kandungan senyawa nitrogen berbahaya seperti amonia, nitrit, dan nitrat. Salah satu cara yang dapat digunakan untuk pengolahan limbah cair domestik yaitu menggunakan metode Multi Soil Layering (MSL). Metode MSL adalah suatu metode pengolahan limbah cair yang meningkatkan fungsi tanah untuk pemurnian limbah cair. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kecepatan pengisian dan laju aerasi optimum serta menentukan efisiensi kinerja sistem MSL dalam menurunkan kadar amonia, nitrit, dan nitrat pada limbah cair domestik. Pengujian dilakukan dengan memvariasikan kecepatan pengisian air limbah yaitu 160, 320, 480, 640, dan 800 L/m²hari dan laju aerasi 0, 2, 4, dan 6 L/menit, serta uji efisiensi sistem MSL selama 40 hari. Analisis data pada penelitian ini menggunakan spektrofotometer UV-Vis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kondisi pengoperasian optimum sistem MSL dicapai pada kecepatan pengisian 320 L/m²hari dan laju aerasi sebesar 6 L/menit. Pada kondisi optimum tersebut, sistem MSL sangat efektif menurunkan kadar polutan berbahaya dengan efisiensi penurunan amonia sebesar 99,75% dan penurunan nitrit sebesar 99,57%. Sebaliknya, kadar nitrat mengalami peningkatan signifikan dengan nilai efisiensi negatif sebesar -60,94%. Kenaikan nitrat ini disebabkan oleh pasokan oksigen yang kaya dari proses aerasi kontinu sehingga memicu aktivitas bakteri nitrifikasi secara masif, sekaligus menghambat kinerja bakteri denitrifikasi di zona anaerob akibat keterbatasan sumber karbon. Secara keseluruhan, sistem MSL memiliki kinerja yang sangat baik dalam mereduksi amonia dan nitrit, namun memerlukan variasi aerasi intermiten atau penambahan bahan organik untuk menuntaskan penyisihan nitrat. |

Inggris) | Population growth increases water demand, which leads to an increase in the volume of domestic wastewater that has the potential to pollute water bodies due to its content of harmful nitrogen compounds such as ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. One method that can be used to treat domestic wastewater is the Multi-Soil Layering (MSL) method. The MSL method is a wastewater treatment method that enhances the soil’s ability to purify wastewater. This study aims to determine the optimal loading rate and aeration rate, as well as to assess the performance efficiency of the MSL system in reducing ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels in domestic wastewater. Tests were conducted by varying the wastewater inflow rate—160, 320, 480, 640, and 800 L/m²day—and the aeration rate—0, 2, 4, and 6 L/minute—and evaluating the MSL system’s efficiency over a 40-day period. Data analysis in this study was performed using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The results showed that the optimal operating conditions for the MSL system were achieved at a flow rate of 320 L/m²day and an aeration rate of 6 L/minute. Under these optimal conditions, the MSL system was highly effective at reducing levels of hazardous pollutants, with an ammonia removal efficiency of 99.75% and a nitrite removal efficiency of 99.57%. Conversely, nitrate levels increased significantly, with a negative removal efficiency of -60.94%. This increase in nitrate is caused by the abundant oxygen supply from the continuous aeration process, which triggers massive nitrifying bacterial activity while simultaneously inhibiting the performance of denitrifying bacteria in the anaerobic zone due to limited carbon sources. Overall, the MSL system performs very well in reducing ammonia and nitrite, but requires intermittent aeration or the addition of organic matter to complete nitrate removal. |
