Abtrak (Bhs. Inggris)The Banda Sea is part of WPPNRI 714 which has active oceanographic dynamics due to seasonal upwelling phenomena, thus forming a sharp temperature gradient known as the thermal front and plays an important role in determining the suitability of the habitat of the skipjack fish (Katsuwonus pelamis). This study aims to analyze the spatial characteristics of the thermal front in the Banda Sea in 2020–2024 and map the spatial distribution of skipjack habitat suitability based on the integration of sea surface temperature (SPL), chlorophyll-a, and thermal front. The method used is quantitative descriptive based on AquaMODIS satellite image processing, with thermal front detection using the Canny edge detection algorithm and Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) modeling using a threshold-based model approach. The results show that the incidence of thermal front increases in the western season and decreases in the eastern season with the highest frequency occurring in December 2024 (6,343 pixels) and the lowest in August 2023 (425 pixels). The HSI area shows a similar pattern following the monsoon cycle, with the widest area in the eastern season (593,376 km² in September 2024) and narrowest in the second transition season (752 km² in November 2021). Based on the results of this study, it is shown that the formation of thermal fronts and HSI in the Banda Sea is influenced by the annual monsoon cycle and the climate variability of ENSO, although the two are not always spatially or temporally confluent due to the time lag of oceanographic response.
