Penelitian ini mengkaji hubungan antara penggunaan teknik penerjemahan harfiah dalam subtitel serial Netflix "Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story" dengan tingkat pemahaman lintas budaya mahasiswa Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris. Penelitian menggunakan desain kuantitatif korelasional dengan kuesioner tertutup berskala Likert sebagai instrumen utama untuk mengumpulkan data persepsi mahasiswa mengenai aspek linguistik dan budaya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya hubungan positif dan searah yang signifikan antara kemampuan mahasiswa dalam mengenali penerjemahan harfiah dengan kedalaman pemahaman lintas budaya mereka. Dalam bagian pembahasan, ditemukan bahwa meskipun penerjemahan harfiah sering dianggap kaku dan kurang natural secara bahasa, teknik ini memiliki peran krusial dalam membantu mahasiswa mengidentifikasi referensi budaya spesifik dan menangkap intensi asli karakter yang mungkin hilang dalam teknik penerjemahan lain. Namun, temuan juga menunjukkan bahwa ketergantungan pada penerjemahan harfiah tanpa didampingi literasi budaya yang memadai dapat memicu kesalahpahaman interpretasi dan kebingungan pada mahasiswa, terutama terkait tindakan karakter yang sangat terikat pada konteks budaya sejarah tertentu. Secara keseluruhan, penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa penerjemahan harfiah dapat menjadi jembatan efektif untuk mempertahankan otentisitas budaya dalam pembelajaran bahasa, asalkan penggunaannya diimbangi dengan penjelasan konteks yang memadai untuk menghindari celah informasi.

This study examines the relationship between the use of literal translation techniques in the subtitles of the Netflix series "Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story" and the level of cross-cultural understanding among English Education students. The research employed a quantitative correlational design, utilizing a closed-ended Likert scale questionnaire as the primary instrument to collect data on students' perceptions regarding linguistic and cultural aspects. The results indicate a significant positive and linear correlation between the students' ability to recognize literal translation and the depth of their cross-cultural understanding. In the discussion section, it was found that although literal translation is often perceived as rigid and linguistically unnatural. This technique plays a crucial role in helping students identify specific cultural references and capture the original intentions of characters that might be lost in other translation techniques. However, the findings also suggest that a reliance on literal translation without adequate cultural literacy can trigger interpretational misunderstandings and confusion among students, particularly regarding character actions that are deeply tied to specific historical and cultural contexts. Overall, this study concludes that literal translation can serve as an effective bridge to maintain cultural authenticity in language learning and provided its use that is balanced with sufficient contextual explanations to avoid informational gaps.
