| Abstrak (Bhs. Indonesia) | Speaking merupakan salah satu dari kemampuan dasar yang sangat penting untuk mengekspresikan perasaan, sikap, dan ide-ide. Speaking dapat mendorong para siswa untuk fokus pada penggunaan bahasa yang tepat. Hal ini baik untuk perkembangan bahasa siswa. Fokus dari penelitian ini adalah tentang “The Effect of Direct Method on the Improvement of Studernts’ Speaking Skill (An Experimental Study on the Eight Grade at SMP Negeri 3 Purwokerto Academic Year 2012/2013)”Tujuan dari penelitian ini yaitu (1) untuk mengetahui kemampuan speaking siswa kelas delapan di SMP Negeri 3 Purwokerto tahun ajaran 2012/2013, (2) untuk mengetahui apakah direct method member efek dalam meningkatkan kemampuan speaking siswa di SMP Negeri 3 Purwokerto tahun ajaran 2012/2013, dan (3) untuk mengetahui tanggapan guru dan siswa tentang penerapan direct method dalam meningkatkan kemampuan speaking di SMP Negeri 3 Purwokerto. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimen, bentuk quasi eksperimen. Data diperoleh dari tes, observasi, kuesioner dan interview. Setelah data terkumpul, peneliti menganalisis hasil pre test dan post test dengan menggunakan rumus t-test untuk menghitung hasil tes yang dihubungkan dengan hasil observasi dan hasil quesioner dan selanjutnya dibuat kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukan peningkatan kemampuan siswa dalam speaking. Hal itu dapat dilihat dari hasil rata-rata grup eksperimen menunjukan 22 setelah belajar speaking bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan direct method yang mana nilai rata-rata dari kelas control adalah 19.7. Keefektifan dari peningkatan nilai pada kelas eksperimen lebih tinggi (4) dari pada kelas control (2.2). Hal ini menunjukan bahwa siswa kelas viii pada kelas eksperimen mendapatkan nilai tinggi setelah menggunakan direct method. T-test juga menunjukan bahwa t-hitung adalah 8.18 lebih tinggi dari t-tabel 1.671. Dari kegiatan yang dilakukan, tanggapan siswa terhadap aktifitas pembelajaran juga bertambah. Dari data hasil kuesioner dapat dilihat member reson yang positif. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan manfaat bagi para pembaca khususnya mahasiswa jurusan Bahasa Inggris sebagai referensi bagi mereka yang tertarik untuk melakukan penelitian dalam bidang linguistik terapan. |
| Abtrak (Bhs. Inggris) | Speaking is one of the basic skills that is very important to express the feelings, attitudes and ideas. Speaking encourages students to focus on accurate language use. It may well provoke language development. The main concern of this research is about “The Effect of Direct Method on the Improvement of Students’ Speaking Skill (An Experimental Study on the Eight Grade at SMP Negeri 3 Purwokerto Academic Year 2012/2013)”. The purposes of this research are: (1) to find out the students’ speaking ability of the eight grade at SMP Negeri 3 Purwokerto academic year 20102/2013, (2) to find out the effect of direct method in improving students’ speaking skill of the eight grade at SMP Negeri 3 Purwokerto academic year 2012/2013, (3) to find out the opinion of the teacher and students about direct method to improve the students’ speaking skill at SMP Negeri 3 Purwokerto. This research belongs to an experimental research and quasi experimental design. The data were taken from test, observation, questionnaire, and interview. After the data collected, the researcher analyzes pre test and post test results by using t- test formula to calculate test result then cross check it with the results of observation and questionnaire, and then made conclusions. The result of the research showed an improvement on students’ speaking skill. It could be seen from the experimental class scores was 22 after learning English speaking using direct method; while the mean of the control class was 19.7. The effect of score improvement at the experimental class (4) was higher than that of the control class (2.2). Therefore, the eight grade students in experimental class had was higher score after using clustering technique. The t-test also showed that t-count 8.18 is higher than t-table 1.671. The result gave good responses as could be seen from the data analysis of the questionnaire. This research is expected the teacher benefits for students of English Department as the reference for them that are interested in conducting the research in the field of applied linguistic. |
