| Abtrak (Bhs. Inggris) | Supernatural phenomena are often raised as a theme in horror films by presenting religious leaders and paranormal characters to combat supernatural forces. This research discusses the representation of the sacredness of paranormal Ed and Lorraine in the film The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist, which differs from many other horror films by showing their success in combating supernatural beings. The method used is qualitative with Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis technique through Stuart Hall's representation theory in the form of encoding and decoding. The research results show that the encoding process in this film encodes messages of sacredness through a combination of spiritual elements, including religious symbols like the Cross and prayer, as well as supernatural abilities such as retrocognition, clairvoyance, and demonology. Meanwhile, decoding provides space for the audience to interpret the messages conveyed in the film related to sacredness. This research contributes to the study of representation by showing how elements of sacredness are integrated into the portrayal of paranormal characters. This combination enriches the complexity of stories in the horror genre and helps society understand the depiction of sacred elements in contemporary entertainment media. This research recommends further studies to analyze public perceptions of the sacredness of paranormal figures and religious leaders in horror films, as well as cross-cultural, religious, and traditional differences in influencing the representation of sacredness in horror films. |
