Penelitian ini berjudul, “Exploring the Teacher and Students Classroom Interaction on the Social Science of Immersion Class (A Descriptive Study at Grade Seven of SMP Negeri 2 Purwokerto Academic Year 2011/2012)”. Tiga rumusan masalah dalam penelitian ini yaitu bagaimana interaksi yang terjadi antara guru dengan siswa saat pelajaran Ilmu Pengetahuan Sosial berlangsung, masalah-masalah yang dihadapi siswa dalam berinteraksi di kelas, dan solusi yang diberikan oleh guru untuk menyelesaikan masalah siswa dalam interaksi siswa di kelas.
Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif dengan mengambil teknik purposive sampling. Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah interaksi kelas antara seorang guru dan 75 siswa (model check list observation) dan kuesioner untuk menemukan permasalahan siswa ketika berinteraksi di kelas, serta wawancara dengan guru untuk menemukan solusi.
Hasil penelitian menunjukan interaksi kelas antara guru dan siswa belum efektif karena hanya ada enam siswa (37,33%) yang aktif berbicara sedangkan 69 siswa lainnya (62,67%) mengatakan bahwa penjelasan guru sulit dimengerti. Selain itu, baik guru dan siswa hanya fokus pada isi pelajaran bukan pada Bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa pengantar. Terdapat 35 siswa (46,67%) merasa kesulitan untuk berbicara dalam Bahasa Inggris. Disamping itu, ada empat puluh siswa (53,33%) tidak memperhatikan ketika guru bertanya guru dalam Bahasa Inggris. Selain itu, ada 33 siswa (44%) merasa kesulitan dengan soal latihan IPS berbahasa Inggris. Sementara itu, guru berusaha untuk menyelesaikan masalah dengan membuat power point dalam mengajar IPS, guru juga meminta para siswa untuk membuat kelompok kecil dalam mengerjakan tugas di kelas dan dipresentasikan dalam Bahasa Inggris.
Peneliti merekomendasikan pada para siswa untuk menambah jam belajar Bahasa Inggris, misalnya menonton film asing, mendengarkan musik mancanegara, ikut kursus Bahasa Inggris atau membuat kelompok belajar di rumah. Selain itu, guru sebaiknya meminta siswa untuk selalu membawa kamus selama di sekolah dan belajar berdiskusi dalam Bahasa Inggris di kelas.

This research, entitled “Exploring the Teacher and Students Classroom Interaction in a Social Science at Immersion Class (A Descriptive Study of Grade Seven of SMP Negeri 2 Purwokerto Academic Year 2011/2012)”, faces three problems. They are how the interaction between the teacher and the students in Social Science in the classroom is, the problems that are encountered by the students in the classroom interaction, and the solutions proposed by the teacher to solve the students’ problems in classroom interaction.
In conducting the research, the researcher used descriptive method with purposive sampling technique. The data are classroom interaction between a teacher and seventy five students that was observed by observation checklist, the students’ problems in the classroom interaction in Social Science that was obtained by asking the students to fulfill a questionnaire, and the teacher’s solution to solve the students’ problems that were obtained by interviewing the teacher.
The result shows that the interaction between the teacher and the students has not been effective yet because there are only six students (37,33%) who are active to speak in the classroom whereas sixty nine students (62,67%) state that the teacher’s explanation is difficult to understand. Furthermore, both the teacher and the students still focused on the Social Science not on the use of English language in the interaction. There are thirty three students (46,67%) still find it difficult to speak or present the material in English. Besides, there are forty students (53,33%) who do not pay attention when the teacher asks them using the English language. Also, there are thirty three students (44%) who are still unable to understand the Social Science text book written in English. However; the teacher tries to solve the problems by teaching Social Science materials on the form of power points using an LCD projector. The teacher often asks the students to do exercise in group and present the task in English Language.
In line with the result, the researcher recommends the students to learn English more by for example seeing foreign movies on TV or cinema, listening foreign music, taking an English course or making a study group. In addition, to the teacher should ask the students to look up vocabularies in a dictionary and asks the students to have a discussion in English in a small group.
