Judul ArtikelPREVALENCE OF GASTROINTESTINAL HELMINTHS IN PET CATS BY FAECAL EXAMINATION IN PURWOKERTO
Abstrak (Bhs. Indonesia)Cats are a popular pet all over the world, as in Purwokerto, given the number of pet shops. Cats are vulnerable to diseases and parasites, which can increase the risk of disease transmission to humans. This study aims to investigate the gastrointestinal helminth species that infect pet cats in Purwokerto, the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminth infection in Purwokerto, and differences in gastrointestinal helminth infections in Purwokerto between sex of the cats and sample source. A total of 106 faecal samples were random-sampled by cross-section survey from the clinic and cat keeping homes in Purwokerto, and the feces were studied using the floatation method. In this study, four helminth species were identified: Toxocara cati, Ancylostoma sp., Diphyllobothrium latum, and Dipylidium caninum, with a 38.5% prevalence of gastrointestinal helminth infection, which, in terms of the prevalence category, is categorized as commonly. There was no significant difference in the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminth infection based on the sex of the cats and the sample source. Considering a number of prevalence of gastrointestinal helminth infection in pet cats in Purwokerto, cat owners must be aware of the problem and take preventive measures such as routine anthelmintic administration, maintaining hygiene and sanitation, and avoiding feeding raw meat to the cats.
