Latar belakang dari penelitian ini adalah strategi dalam pembelajaran diperlukan oleh setiap guru agar proses pembelajaran dapat berjalan dengan baik. Membaca adalah salah satu keterampilan bahasa yang harus dipelajari dan dikuasai oleh siswa-siswa di Indonesia. Para siswa membutuhan keterampilan membaca dalam mempelajari bahasa Inggris. Ketika mereka menguasai keterampilan membaca maka mereka akan memahami bacaan dalam bahasa Inggris dan juga dapat menambah kosakata siswa. Strategi dalam pembelajaran dibutuhkan untuk membantu siswa dalam memahami teks bahasa Inggris agar proses belajar mengajar dapat berjalan dengan baik. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah: (1) untuk mengetahui strategi yang digunakan guru dalam mengajar pemahaman membaca, (2) untuk mendeskripsikan proses implementasi dari strategi yang digunakan guru dalam kegiatan mengajar pemahaman membaca pada kelas 8 di SMP Muhammadiyah Maos. Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian eksploratif. Data penelitian diperoleh melalui observasi, wawancara dan dokumentasi. Dalam menganalisis data, peneliti memilih data, menampilkan data dan menyajikan data melalui penjelasan deskriptif. Hasil dari penelitian ini: (1) strategi yang digunakan guru adalah membangun pengetahuan latar belakang, menggunakan gambar sensorik dan bertanya, (2) proses implementasi strategi dibagi menjadi 3 tahap: pra-pembelajaran, tahap pembelajaran dan tahap akhir pembelajaran.
Berdasarkan data diatas maka disimpulkan bahwa guru bahasa Inggris menggunakan membangun latar belakang pengetahuan, menggunakan gambar dan sesi bertanya.

The background of this research was that learning strategies were needed by teacher so that learning process can run well. Reading is one kind of language skills that should be learned and mastered by Indonesians students. They need reading skills to learn English. When students has mastered reading skill, the will understand text in English easily and the students can add their vocabularies. Teachers were required to use strategies that make students understand the material easily. It was not easy to teach English subject included in reading comprehension class so the teacher was required to use interesting strategies to help students in learning English especially in reading comprehension. The objectives of this research were (1) to know out the strategies that used by teacher in teaching reading comprehension, (2) to describe the process of implementation strategies that used by teacher in teaching reading comprehension at eight grade students in SMP Muhammadiyah Maos.
The method in this research was explorative qualitative research. The data were obtained through observation, interview with teacher and documentation. In analyzing the data, the researcher selected and displayed the data and presented the data into descriptive explanation.
The result of this research were (1) the strategies that used by teacher in teaching reading comprehension were activating or building background knowledge, using sensory images and questioning. There were 3 stages of the process in teaching reading: pre-teaching activities, whilst-teaching activities and post-teaching activities. (2) the implementation process of strategies is divided in the 3 stages: Pre-teaching activities, Whilst-teaching activities and Post-teaching activities
Based on the results of research, it can be concluded that the teacher used strategies: activating or building background knowledge, using sensory images and questioning.
