Abstrak (Bhs. Indonesia)Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui keefektifan strategi Virtual Ice Breaker dalam meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara siswa dalam pembelajaran online. Rancangan eksperimen semu digunakan dengan dua kelas siswa kelas tujuh di SMP Negeri 2 Purwokerto yaitu kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol. Data diperoleh melalui tes berbicara, observasi dan wawancara. Hasil komputasi menunjukkan bahwa strategi Virtual Ice-Breaker efektif dalam meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara siswa dimana kelompok eksperimen mendapat nilai terbaik (80,14) daripada kelompok kontrol (73,13). Persentase peningkatan pada kelompok eksperimen lebih besar sebesar 19,66 (29,35%) dibandingkan dengan kelompok kontrol 10,67 (16,13%). Selanjutnya dalam menentukan T-Test, nilai signifikansi (Sig. 2-tailed) adalah 0,000 < 0,05 yang berarti Hipotesis Alternatif diterima dan Hipotesis Null ditolak dimana terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan antara kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol. Dengan kata lain, keterampilan berbicara siswa telah meningkat. Hasil ini didukung dengan hasil informasi observasi dan wawancara pada kelompok eksperimen. Pada observasi yang dilakukan, penerapan virtual ice breaker berhasil diterapkan dalam pembelajaran. Hal ini terlihat dari hasil checklist observasi yang memenuhi lima syarat penerapan ice breaker virtual di kelas yaitu Clarity, Relevance, Non-Threating, Energizing dan Interesting. Dampak yang terjadi antara lain mampu menciptakan hubungan guru-siswa yang positif dan partisipasi siswa yang tinggi. Selain itu, siswa juga menunjukkan persepsi yang memuaskan. Dalam hasil wawancara, 11 siswa menyatakan bahwa penggunaan ice breaker membantu mereka dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris dan 10 siswa mengungkapkan bahwa keterampilan berbicara mereka meningkat selama pemberian ice breaker dalam pembelajaran. Kegiatan lisan yang diterapkan merangsang siswa untuk lebih bersemangat berbicara sehingga siswa dapat terus berlatih berbicara. Kesimpulannya, penggunaan strategi Ice-Breaker dalam pengajaran berbicara efektif untuk meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara siswa dalam pembelajaran online siswa kelas tujuh di SMP N 2 Purwokerto. Para guru dapat mencoba memanfaatkan strategi Virtual Ice Breaker untuk dimanfaatkan dalam kegiatan kelas online mereka untuk melakukan suasana belajar yang efektif dan menarik.
Abtrak (Bhs. Inggris)This research aimed at investigating the effectiveness of Virtual Ice Breaker strategy in improving students’ speaking skill in online learning. A quasi experimental design was employed with two classes of the seventh graders at SMP Negeri 2 Purwokerto namely the experimental group and the control group. The data were obtained through speaking test, observation and interview.
The computation results showed that Virtual Ice-Breaker strategy was effective in improving the students’ speaking skill where the experimental group got the best score (80.14) than the control group (73.13). The percentage improvement in the experimental group was greater by 19.66 (29.35%) compared to the control group 10.67 (16.13%). Furthermore, in determining the T-Test, the significance score (Sig. 2-tailed) was 0.000 < 0.05, it means the Alternative Hypothesis was accepted and Null Hypothesis was rejected where there was a significant effect between the experimental group and the control group. In other words, students’ speaking skill have improved.
This result was supported with the informations of observation and interview results in experimental group. In the observations made, the implementation of virtual ice breaker was successfully implemented in learning. It was shown on the results of observation checklist that met the five requirements for implementing a virtual ice breaker in the classroom, namely Clarity, Relevance, Non-Threating, Energizing and Interesting. The impacts that occured include being able to create a positive teacher-students rapport and high student participation. In addition, students also showed a satisfactory perception. In the interview result, 11 students stated that the use of ice breaker helped them in improving their English speaking skill and 10 students revealed that their speaking skills were improved during the provision of ice breaker in learning. The oral activities that were applied stimulated students to be eager to talk more so that students could keep on to practice speaking.
In conclusion, the use of Ice-Breaker strategy in teaching speaking is effective to improve students’ speaking skill in online learning of the seventh grade students in SMP N 2 Purwokerto. The teachers may try to take advantage of Virtual Ice-Breaker stragey to be utilized in their online classroom activities to conduct an effective and interesting learning atmosphere.
