| Abstrak (Bhs. Indonesia) | Penelitian ini merupakan analisis teori auteurism dalam film yang disutradarai oleh James Wan. Beberapa film horror seperti Saw, Insidious, dan The Conjuring merupakan film yang sukses menembus dunia perfilman Hollywood. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti mengidentifikasi karakteristik atau ciri khas James Wan dalam membuat film. Peneliti mengidentifikasi karakteristik sutradara menggunakan teori auteurism yang dipopulerkan oleh Francois Truffaut. Teori tersebut digunakan untuk mengetahui karakteristik dalam film James Wan. Adapun tinjauan pustaka yang peneliti gunakan pada penelitian ini antara lain biografi sutradara, film sebagai teks, teori auteur, film horror sebagai genre, dan analisis auteurism: kajian film studies. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menjelaskan karakteristik apa saja yang menjadi ciri khas James Wan dalam menyutradarai film Saw, Insidious, dan The Conjuring. Dari analisis yang peneliti lakukan ditemukan beberapa latar belakang James Wan yang mempengaruhi karakteristiknya dalam membuat film yaitu film-film yang telah menginspirasi dan sutradara yang dia idolakan, konsep old-school horror klasik yang digunakan, produksi film dengan budget rendah. Kemudian peneliti juga menemukan karakteristik dari mise-en-scene seperti, menjadikan tempat misterius sebagai setting, penggunaan low key lighting, banyak mengatur kamera dengan establishing shot, dan penggunaan sounds effect. Dengan karakteristik tersebut, film yang disutradari oleh Wan berhasil menembus keuntungan besar dengan berbagai ciri khas yang ia kembangkan dengan kreatifitasnya.

| Abtrak (Bhs. Inggris) | This study is an auteurism theory analysis in a film directed by James Wan. Some horror films such as Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring become successful films on the Hollywood film world. In this study, the research identified the characteristics of James Wan in making the film. The research found the characteristics of the director using auteurism theory by Francois Truffaut. The theory is applied the background that affect characteristics of James Wan’s films. The literature review that researchers use in this research are biography of director, film as text, auteur theory, horror film: a characteristic of director, and auteurism analysis: study of film studies. The purpose of this research is to explain what are characteristics of James Wan in directing Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring. The result of this research, the researchers found the background of James Wan that contain of his characteristics such us, his favorite film and director that inspire him, his classic old-school horror concept, low budget on films production, and he fight his fear during filming. Then, the researcher also found the characteristics of mise-en-scene like, the use of setting as mysterious place, the use of low key lighting, and lots of set up camera shots with establishing shot, and the use of sound effects. Thus, all of the characteristics, the film directed by Wan managed succesfully and bring the big advantage with various characteristics that he developed with his creativity.
