| Abstrak (Bhs. Indonesia) | Penelitian ini berjudul “The Signification of the Color Red as Symbol Based on Patti Bellantoni’s Color Theory in Lynne Ramsay’s film We Need to Talk about Kevin: A Semiotics Analysis”. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mencari tahu makna dari warna merah sebagai simbol berdasarkan theori warna milik Patti Bellantoni dalam film “We Need to Talk about Kevin” karya Lynne Ramsay dengan menggunakan teori semiotika milik Peirce. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan semiotika. Data penelitian didapatkan dari data primer beruba film “We Need to Talk about Kevin” dan data sekunder berupa literatur dan sumber-sumber lain yang mendukung penelitian ini. Selain itu, pembahasan penelitian dibagi menjadi empat bagian sesuai dengan empat dari enam sifat warna merah menurut teori makna warna. Bagian pertama menjelaskan simbol yang memiliki makna merah kuat. Simbol ini muncul sebagai rampu merah yang menyelimuti orang-orang dalam adegan insiden. Bagian kedua menjelaskan simbol yang memiliki makna merah menyimpang. Simbol ini muncul sebagai objek-objek berwarna merah yang muncul dalam adegan dimana Kevin menunjukan sifat menantangnya. Bagian ketiga menjelaskan simbol yang memiliki makna merah gelisah. Simbol ini muncul sebagai jam merah yang muncul dalam adegan dimana Eva dan suaminya sedang bersama. Bagian keempat menjelaskan simbol yang memiliki makna merah murka. Simbol ini muncul sebagai cat merah dan kaleng merah yang mengelilingi Eva dalam beberapa adegan. Di dalam setiap bagian pembahasan, simbol-simbol yang ada dianalisa dengan mengidentifikasi elemen-elemen tanda dan interpretasi kontekstual dan universal yang mereka miliki. Hasil dari penelitian menyimpulkan bahwa film ini berfokus dalam menggunakan warna merah sebagai simbol untuk memaknakan emosi negatif, termasuk kekuatan, penyimpangan, kegelisahan, dan kemarahan. Hal ini dilakukan demi membangun tema dari film yang berpusat pada sudut pandang subjektif Eva mengenai kebiasaan dan perbuatan Kevin. |

Inggris) | This research entitled “The Signification of the Color Red as Symbol Based on Patti Bellantoni’s Color Theory in Lynne Ramsay’s Film We Need to Talk about Kevin: A Semiotics Analysis”. It aims to figure out the signification of the color red as symbol based on Patti Bellantoni’s color theory in Lynne Ramsay’s film “We Need to Talk about Kevin” by using Peirce’s semiotic theory. This research uses qualitative method with semiotics approach. The research data is taken from primary data in the form of the film “We Need to Talk about Kevin” and also secondary data in the form of literatures and sources that support the research. Furthermore, the discussion of this study is divided into four main parts which correspondent with four out of the six characteristics that the color red has based on the color theory. The first part explains symbol that signifies powerful red. This symbol takes form as red light that engulfs the characters in the incident scenes. The second part explains symbol that signifies defiant red. This symbol takes form as seven red-colored objects in the scenes where Kevin is showing his defiant behaviors. The third part explains the symbol that signifies anxious red. This symbol takes form as red clock in scenes where Eva and her husband are together. The fourth part explains symbol that signifies angry red. This symbol takes form as red paint and red cans that surround Eva in some scenes. In every part of the discussion, the symbols are analyzed by identifying their sign elements and their contextual and universal interpretations. The research result concludes that the film focuses on utilizing the color red as symbol to signify negative emotions which include power, deviancy, anxiousness, and anger. This is done to build its theme which centers on Eva’s subjective perspective dealing with Kevin’s behavior and action. |
