Penguji: Rizki Februansyah, S.S, M.A. Kementerian Riset, Teknologi dan Pendidikan Tinggi, Universitas Jenderal Soedirman, Fakultas Ilmu Budaya, Jurusan Sastra Inggris, Program Studi Sastra Inggris, Purwokerto. Penelitian yang berjudul “Grouping as A Controlling Tool to Suppress Society in Westerfeld’s Uglies” bertujuan untuk mencari tahu bagaimana pengelompokan masyarakat digunakan sebagai alat untuk mengontrol untuk menekan masyarakat dalam Novel Uglies oleh Scott Westerfeld. Dalam menganalis data, penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif. Data utama diambil dari Novel Uglies oleh Scott Westerfeld. Teori Psikoanalisa digunakan untuk menganalisa bagaimana pengelompokan masyarakat dapat mempengaruhi karakter dalam novel untuk berperilaku dan melakukan sesuatu berdasarkan kebijakan pemerintah. Selanjutnya, konsep tentang sosial kontrol dan pengelompokan digunakan untuk membantu menganalisa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ditemukan tiga kelompok yang dikelompokkan oleh pemerintah. Ketiga kelompok tersebut adalah mereka yang jelek dan berumur dibawah 16 tahun tinggal di Uglyville, mereka yang cantik dan berumur di atas 16 tahun di New Pretty Town,dan mereka yang cantik dan tua tinggal di Suburbs. Pengelompokkan tersebut dibentuk untuk mencegah hal yang terjadi di masa lalu di mana masyarakat tinggal dengan banyak perbedaan yang membuat mereka melakukan kerusuhan dan kekacauan. Kemudian, grup yang paling mudah dipengaruhi dan dikontrol adalah Pretties yang tinggal di New Petty Town. Hal ini terjadi karena Pretties mendapatkan brain lesion setelah menjalani operasi plastik yang mencegah mereka berfikir untuk menentang pemerintah. Selain itu, pemerintah juga memberikan banyak fasilitas dalam bentuk yang menyenangkan yang membuat mereka fokus pada hal itu dan tidak peduli dengan lingkungan sekitar. |

This research entitled “Grouping as A Controlling Tool to Suppress Society in Westerfeld’s Uglies” aims to figure out how grouping is used as controlling tool to suppress society in Westerfled’s Uglies. In analyzing the data, this research uses qualitative method. While, the primary data was taken from Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. Psychoanalysis theory is used to analyse how grouping can affect the character to behave and do something based on government’s policy. Furthermore, the concept of social control and grouping were used to support the analyis. The result shows that there are three grouping found in the novel. Those three groups are the ones who are under 16 and Ugly live in Uglyville, the ones who are above 16 and have been prety live in New Pretty Town, and the ones who are Old and Pretty who live in The Suburbs. Government create those three groups to form grouping based on their similarities, the look and the age, in order to control all of socities. Those groups are created to prevent the chaos that happend in the past where the society lived with a lot of differences which drove them to create chaos. It is found that the group that is most easily to be affected is Pretties who live in Pretty Town because Pretties suffer from brain lession after undergoing plastic surgery that prevent them to think about serious thing such as critize government or rebel. Besides, the government also give them so much fun facilities that make them focus on those things and do not care about surrondings. |
