| Judul Artikel | ANTAGONISTIC ACTIVITY OF BACTERIA ISOLATED FROM IRON SAND SOIL AGAINST BACTERIAL PATHOGENS OF Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus |
| Abstrak (Bhs. Indonesia) | Iron sand soil of Sodong beach, Cilacap, Central Java, Indonesia is dominated by sand materials having low organic matters, temperature were 27oC-45oC, pH 5 to 9, and humidity 45-50%. The objectives of the study were to observe the populations and identities of bacteri isolated from ison sand soils, and the capability of bacteria antagonistic to the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus in vitro. The results showed that ten of isolates were successfully isolated from iron sand soils. The bacterial population on iron sand soils were ranged from 1.45 x 103CFU/mL to 2.87 x 103. The ten bacterial crude extracts showed that five crude extracts were capable of inhibiting the growth of E.coli and S.aureu. The fifth crude extracts were from isolates of G2, H2, I3, P3 and R2 which the diameters of the clear zones were varied. The crude extract of P3 isolate showed the best inhibition against E.coli (24.5 mm) and the extracts of G2 isolate resulted in the biggest inhibition towards S. aureus (23 mm). The selected isolates G2, H2, I3, P3, and R2 were characterized and identified based on their morphological, biochemical and nutritional assays. Based on Bergeys’s Determinative Bacteriology 9th edition, isolates were might belong to the genus Bacillus and Enterobacter. |
