| Judul Artikel | The Perspective of Orientalism in J.R.R Tolkien's Trilogy: The Lord of the Rings |
| Abstrak (Bhs. Indonesia) | Penelitian yang berjudul “The Perspective of Orientalism in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Trilogy: The Lord of the Rings” bertujuan untuk menganalisis perspektif Orientalisme yang ditunjukkan di dalam trilogy novel The Lord of the Rings. Dalam penelitian ini, metode deskriptif kualitatif digunakan untuk menganalisis data yang diambil dari trilogi novel The Lord of the Rings. Sumber data dari penelitian ini adalah novel yang dianalisis melalui kerangka pendekatan postkolonial dan teori Orientalisme. Terdapat langkah-langkah yang dilakukan dalam menganalisis dan mengetahui jawaban dari pertanyaan yang diajukan dalam penelitian ini. Yang pertama adalah menentukan novel yang akan dianalisis yaitu trilogi The Lord of the Rings dan yang kedua adalah mendapatkan unsur-unsur intrinsik dari novel, seperti narasi dialog dari narator dan karakter sebagai elemen intrinsik yang paling dominan dalam novelnya. Hal ini dilakukan untuk menganalisis data tersebut berurusan dengan pertanyaan penelitian tentang bagaimana The Lord of the Rings menggambarkan perspektif orientalisme dalam teks-teksnya. Yang ketiga adalah menganalisis data dengan menghubungkannya dengan teori Orientalisme melalui unsur-unsur intrinsik dari novel. Langkah terakhir adalah menyimpulkan. Dari penelitian, ada dua cara bagaimana perspektif orientalisme dalam The Lord of the Rings digambarkan atau ditunjukan. Yang pertama adalah dengan menciptakan representasi Timur dan membuat dikotomi antara Barat dan Timur. Timur direpresentasikan sebagai kegelapan, sebagai kulit hitam, dan binatang jahat. Sementara itu, dikotomi menggambarkan kontras antara Barat dan Timur dan menggambarkan Barat sebagai putih, dan orang-orang baik. Yang kedua adalah dengan menggambarkan proses pengliyanan Timur dan wacana kolonial. Proses pengliyanan yang ditunjukan dalam novel menggambarkan yang liyan (Timur) sebagai hewan dan sebagai kekanakan, sementara wacana kolonial menggambarkan bagaimana Barat mendominasi Timur dalam novel. |
| Abtrak (Bhs. Inggris) | The Research entitled “The Perspective of Orientalism in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Trilogy: The Lord of the Rings” is aimed to analyze the perspective of Orientalism shown in trilogy novel The Lord of the Rings. In this research, descriptive qualitative method is used to analyze the data taken from the trilogy of The Lord of the Rings novel. The data sources of this study was the novel which is analyzed through the framework of postcolonial approach and Orientalism theory. There are steps done in extracting and analyzing the novel as the answer of the research question. The first is determining the novel which is going to be analyzed that is the trilogy The Lord of the Rings and the second is obtaining the intrinsic elements of the novels, such the dialogue narration from the narrator and the characters as the most dominant intrinsic elements in the novels. It is done to analyze them dealing with the research question about how The Lord of the Rings depicts the perspective of orientalism in its texts. The third is analyzing the data by connecting them with the Orientalism theory through the intrinsic elements from the novels. The last step is taking conclusion. From the research, there are two ways of how the perspective of orientalism in The Lord of the Rings are depicted. The first is by creating a representation of the East and making the dichotomy between the West and the East. The East is represented as the darkness, as the black, and the evil beast. Meanwhile, the dichotomies depict the contrast between the West and the East and represent the West as the white, and the good men. The second is by depicting the Othering process of the East and discourse of colonial. The othering process depicted in the novel represents the other (Eastern) as the animal and as a child-like, while the discourse of colonial depicts on how the West dominate the East in the novels. |
