| Abstrak (Bhs. Indonesia) | Penelitian yang berjudul “Maurice’s Developing Stages of Homosexual Identity as Portrayed in E. M. Forster’s Novel Maurice” bertujuan untuk memahami tumbuh kembangnya identitas homosexual dalam kehidupan Maurice. Penelitian ini menjelaskan bagaimana Maurice menemukan jati dirinya yang tersembunyi dan juga bagaimana dia menjalani kehidupannya sebagai seorang homoseksual di dalam sebuah masyarakat berkepercayaan kristen. Peneliti menggunakan metode kualitatif untuk menganalisis data. Data primer adalah kutipan-kutipan di dalam novel Maurice oleh Forster yang berhubungan dengan isu utama penelitian ini.Sebagai tambahan, peneitian ini juga menggunakan teori psikologi dalam sastra untuk menjelaskan peristiwa yang berhubungan dengan psikologi di dalam novel dan juga teori tentang tahapan dalam identitas homoseksual oleh Vivienne Cass untuk menganalisa lebih jauh tentang isui dentitas homoseksual di dalam novel. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Maurice melalui beberapa tahapan di dalam novel tersebut. Namun, peneliti menemukan bahwa Maurice memilih untuk tidak melanjutkan perkembangan identitas homoseksualnya di fase akhir teori ini.Pada akhirnya, penelitian ini juga membuktikan bahwas ebuah identitas homoseksual memiliki tahapan-tahapan yang perkembangannya dipengaruhi oleh beberapa factor tertentu baik dari diri sendiri maupun dari pengaruh luar seperti lingkungan sekitar. Penelitian ini juga membuktikan bahwa individu tersebut bias saja berhenti melanjutkan perkembangan identitas homoseksualnya berdasarkan faktor-faktor tersebut sebelum identitas homoseksual tersebut mengakar dalam hidup.

| Abtrak (Bhs. Inggris) | The research entitled “Maurice’s Developing Stages of Homosexual Identity as Portrayed in E. M. Forster’s Novel Maurice” aims to figure out the developing of homosexual identity in the life of Maurice. It explained how Maurice developed his hidden self and behavior and how he lived his life as a homosexual among the faithful christian society. The researcher used qualitative method in analyzing the data. The primary data is the quotations which contain the related issue of homosexuality in Forster’s novel Maurice. In addition, the research used the theory of psychology of literature to explain the psychological event in novel and the stage of homosexual identity theory by Vivienne Cass to analyze further about the issue of homosexual identity in the novel. The result of this research shows that Maurice underwent certain stages in the novel. However, the researcher found out that at the later phase, Maurice ceased to precede the development of his homosexual identity. Finally, this research also proves that homosexual identity stages are highly affected by certain factors from self and the surrounding factors. Due to these factors, this research also proves that an individual may stop the development before the homosexual identity fully grown within their life.
