Abstrak (Bhs. Indonesia)Tujuan penelitian ini mendeskripsikan penerimaan orang tua anak tunagrahita di Purwokerto dan mendeskripsikan peran orang tua dalam proses belajar anak tunagrahita di Purwokerto. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode studi kasus dengan 5 informan yang diwawancara. Studi kasus lebih bersifat penjelajahan: kesimpulannya studi kasus deskriptif. Seseorang menjadi anak tunagrahita dapat disebabkan beberapa hal. Adapun faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan anak tunagrahita dapat dikategorikan dalam beberapa faktor yaitu sebelum melahirkan, faktor-faktor saat kelahiran dan faktor setelah kelahiran. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa permasalahan awal yang dihadapi orang tua ialah orang tua merasa sedih saat mengetahui anaknya mengalami tunagrahita, biaya terapi serta kebutuhan anak. Proses penerimaan orang tua pada anak tunagrahita diawali proses penolakan ditunjukkan dengan ketidak percayaan serta kebingungan dan kesedihan orang tua atas kondisi anak, selain itu orang tua merasa shock. Kemudian proses kemarahan terhadap diri sendiri, anak maupun orang lain. Selanjutnya proses tawar-menawar, diwujudkan cara berbicara dengan diri sendiri dan melakukan pembenaran untuk menentramkan hati. Kemudian proses depresi yang ditunjukkan orang tua dengan perasaan bersalah, kecewa dengan kondisi anak. Kemudian yang terakhir proses penerimaan, ditunjukkan dengan sikap pasrah, menerima keadaan anak dan memperhatikan perkembangannya. Pada tahap penerimaan orang tua sudah menerima keadaan anaknya yang mengalami kelainan. Penerimaan orang tua biasanya digambarkan sebagai cinta orang tua kepada anaknya yang berupa kasih sayang, pelukan, dan pujian. Dalam penelitian ini, penerimaan orang tua terlihat dari bagaimana subjek memahami keadaan anak apa adanya, baik dalam tingkah laku positif, negatif, dari kelebihan serta kekurangan anak, memahami kebiasaan-kebiasaan anak dalam kesehariannya, menyadari apa yang bisa dan belum bisa dilakukan anak, serta membentuk ikatan batin yang kuat yang akan diperlukan dalam kehidupan dimasa depan. Bagi orang tua yang belum dapat menerima kondisi anak, agar dapat mengubah pandangan dan penilaian negatif terhadap anak tunagrahita. Orang tua perlu menggali lebih banyak lagi pemahaman tentang anak tunagrahita dengan cara mencari informasi tentang anak tunagrahita melalui buku, majalah ataupun media elektronik, atau bertanya kepada ahlinya, seperti dokter, psikolog dan lain-lain. Sehingga perkembangan anak dapat optimal dan menjadikan kemampuan anak tunagrahita terus meningkat.

Inggris)The present research aims to describe the parents’ acceptance to their mentally retarded children in Purwokerto and their role in learning process of their mentally retarded children in Purwokerto. The research method used in this research was case study with 5 informants. Case study is more exploratory: it means that case study is descriptive. Mental retardation caused by many factors including before, during and after giving birth factor. The results show that the initial problems faced by the parents were they felt very sad knowing their children were mentally retarded, the cost of therapy and their children’s needs. The parents’ acceptance to their mentally retarded children was initiated by the process of denial which was shown by their distrust, confusion and sadness over the condition of their children. Furthermore, they were also shocked. The second was the process of anger towards themselves, the children and other people. Then, the process of bargaining realised by talking to themselves and seeking justification for reassurance. The next process was depression shown by feeling guilty and disappointed with their children’s condition. The last process was acceptance shown by resigning, accepting their children and taking care of their development. In this acceptance stage, they had accepted the condition of their mentally retarded children. The acceptance is usually described as the love of parents to their children in the form of affection, hugs and compliment. In this research, the parent’s acceptance was seen from how the subjects understood their children’s condition in positive or negative behaviour, knew the advantages and disadvantages of their mentally retarded children, understood the habits of their children’s daily life, realised of what children could and could not do, and formed a strong inner bond that would be needed in the future. It is expected for parents who have not been able to accept the condition of their children to change their negative view and judgment of mentally retarded children. They need to get more understanding of mentally retarded children by looking for information about mentally retarded children through books, magazines or electronic media, or asking the experts, such as doctors, psychologists and others so that children’s development can be optimal and make the ability of mentally retarded children continue to develop.
