Penelitian ini berjudul “Symbols of Myth Depicted in Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist” bertujuan untuk mencari tahu makna dan mitos objek yang didefinisikan sebagai simbol dalam novel. Peneliti menggunakan metode kualitatif dalam menganalisis data. Data utamanya adalah novel The Alchemist karya Paulo Coelho. Peneliti menggunakan teori semiotika milik Saussure untuk mengetahui arti dari simbol yang terbagi menjadi penanda dan petanda berdasarkan konteks dalam cerita. Teori mitos juga digunakan untuk menemukan mitos yang menjadi latar belakang simbol-simbol dalam cerita. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada lima objek yang ditemukan dalam novel yang menjadi simbol mitos, yaitu: elang, batu Urim dan Tumim, batu Filsuf, domba, dan gelas kristal. Mitos Eropa dan Mesir adalah mitos yang terkait dengan simbol-simbol. Elang, batu Urim dan Tumim, dan batu Philosopher adalah simbol mitos dari Eropa, domba adalah simbol mitos dari Mesir dan gelas kristal adalah simbol mitos dari Eropa dan Mesir. This research entitled “Symbols of Myth Depicted in Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist” aims to figure out the meaning and the myth of the objects defined as symbols in the novel. The researcher used qualitative method in analyzing the data. The primary data is Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist novel. The researcher used Saussure’s semiotics theory to figure out the meaning of the symbol that is divided into the signifier and the signified based on the context in the story. Theory of myth is also used to discover the myth that becomes the background of the symbols in the story. The result shows that there are five objects found in the novel that becomes the symbols of myth; hawk, Urim and Thummim stones, Philosopher’s stone, sheep, and crystal glass. European and Egyptian myths are the myths that are related to the symbols. Hawk, Urim and Thummim stones and Philosopher’s stone are the symbols of European myth, sheep is the symbol of Egyptian myth and Crystal glass is the symbol of both European and Egyptian myth.
