| Abstrak (Bhs. Indonesia) | Penelitian yang berjudul “Neil Perry’s Suicide in N.H. Kleinbaum’s Dead Poets Society” memiliki tujuan untuk mengetahui perilaku bunuh diri yang dilakukan oleh karakter utama dalam novel tersebut, Neil Perry. Peneliti menggunakan metode kualitatif untuk menganalisis data. Data utamanya adalah Dead Poets Society oleh N.H. Kleinbaum. Selain itu, peneliti menggunakan teori Psikologi dalam Sastra dan Teori Kepribadian milik Carl Rogers untuk menganalisa psikologis dan motivasi Neil Perry terhadap hidupnya dan juga latar belakang dari bunuh diri yang dilakukannya. Teori bunuh diri dan teori-teori lainnya yang berhubungan dengan psikologi dan bunuh diri juga digunakan dalam menganalisis alasan mengapa karakter tersebut memilih untuk bunuh diri. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa depresi berat merupakan pemicu aksi bunuh diri yang dilakukan oleh Neil. Selain itu, peneliti menemukan bahwa motivasi Neil untuk bunuh diri adalah karena keputusasaan yang disebabkan oleh beberapa aspek, dan salah satu aspek terbesar adalah keluarganya. Kurangnya kasih sayang dan dukungan keluarga terhadap gairahnya menyebabkan rasa sakit yang tak dapat dia tahan lagi. Akhirnya, dia melihat bunuh diri sebagai satu-satunya solusi agar rasa sakitnya dapat berakhir. |

| Abtrak (Bhs. Inggris) | The research entitled “Neil Perry’s Suicide in N.H. Kleinbaum’s Dead Poets Society” aims to figure out the suicide of the leading character in the novel, Neil Perry, who end up committing suicide. The researcher used qualitative method to analyze the data. The primary data is Kleinbaum’s Dead Poets Society. In addition, the researcher used Psychology in Literature and Carl Roger’s Personality Theory to analyze Neil Perry’s psychological and motivation toward his life and the background of his suicide. Theories of suicide and proven theories related to the psychological and suicide are also used to analyze the reason why the character chooses to commit suicide. The result of this research shows that severe depression is the trigger of Neil’s action of suicide. Moreover, the researcher found that Neil's motivation to commit suicide is due to the hopelessness that was caused by some aspects, and one of the biggest aspects is his family. The lack of affection and support from the family towards his passion caused the pain that he cannot bear any longer. Finally, he sees suicide as the only relief that his pain will no longer exist. |
