Mimien Aminah S., M.A. Kementrian Riset, Teknologi dan Pendidikan Tinggi, Universitas Jenderal Soedirman, Fakultas Ilmu Budaya, Jurusan Sastra Inggris, Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris Program Studi, Purwokerto. Penelitian yang berjudul “The Characteristics of Contemporary Dystopian Literature in Roth’s Divergent and Collins’ Hunger Games: Comparative Study”memiliki tujuan untuk mengetahui karakteristik dari karya sastra dystopia kontemporer di kedua novel. Peneliti menggunakan motode kualitatif untuk menganalisis data. Data utamanya adalah novel Divergent oleh Veronica Roth dan Hunger Games oleh Suzanne Collins. Sebagai tambahan, teori komparatif dalam sastra digunakan untuk menganalisis persamaan dan perbedaan yang muncul di kedua novel, teori dystopia dalam sastra juga digunakan untuk menganalisis issue dystopia di kedua novel. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan adanya beberapa persamaan dan perbedaan terkait dengan karakteristik dalam karya dystopia di kedua novel. Peneliti menemukan beberapa persamaan pada issue di karya dystopia sehubungan dengan post-apocalyptic settings (keadaan sesudah apokaliptik), young protagonist against conformity, enslavement, and control of government (tokoh protagonist melawan kesetaraan, perbudakan, dan control dari pemerintah), the reliance of technology (kepercayaan pada teknologi), dan an adventure genre (genre petualangan). Pada perbedaan, peneliti menemukan adanya perbedaan pada the way of young protagonist rises (cara tokoh protagonist muncul) dan the depiction of antagonist (kemunculan tokoh antagonis). Pada akhirnya, penelitian ini juga membuktikan bahwa kedua novel adalah karya sastra dystopia kontemporer sehubungan dengan karakteristik yang peneliti temukan. The research entitled “The Characteristics of Contemporary Dystopian Literature in Roth’s Divergent and Collins’ Hunger Games: Comparative Study” aims to figure out the characteristics of contemporary dystopian literature in both novels. The researcher used qualitative method in analyzing the data. The primary data are Roth’s Divergent and Collins’ Hunger Games. In addition, comparative theory in literature is used to analyze the similarities and differences emerged in both novels, dystopian literature is also used to analyze the issue of dystopian literature in both novels. The result of this research shows that there are some similarities and differences related to the characteristic of dystopian literature in both novels. Researcher finds similarities to the issue in dystopian literature regarding to post-apocalyptic settings, young protagonist against conformity, enslavement, and control of government, the reliance of technology, and an adventure genre. In the differences, researcher finds the differences in the way of young protagonist rises and the depiction of antagonist. Finally, this research also prove that both novels can be called as contemporary dystopian literature related with those characteristics that researcher found.
