Penelitian berjudul An Analysis of Ambiguity in the News Headlines of The Jakarta Post dimaksudkan untuk mengidentifikasi tipe-tipe dan penyebab ambiguitas yang tercermin dari pokok-pokok berita dan untuk menemukan keterbacaan dari pokok-pokok berita yang ambigu dari The Jakarta Post. Peneliti menggunakan metode kualitatif dalam menganalisis data. Data penelitiannya adalah pokok-pokok berita dari The Jakarta Post Edisi Agustus 2015. Dalam menjawab pertanyaan-pertanyaan penelitian, peneliti menggunakan lembar data yang berisi data pokok-pokok berita, tipe-tipe ambiguitas, serta penyebab ambiguitas. Peneliti juga menggunakan kuisioner yang diberikan oleh peneliti untuk partisipan dalam menganalisa tingkat keterbacaan dari pokok-pokok berita yang ambigu. Dalam menganalisis tipe-tipe serta penyebab ambiguitas, peneliti menggunakan teori dari Kleidler. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa ada tiga tipe dan enam penyebab dari ambiguitas yang ditemukan pada pokok-pokok berita The Jakarta Post. Yang termasuk didalam tipe-tipe ambiguitas yaitu lexical (21), referential (2) dan grammatical (6). Yang termasuk didalam penyebab ambiguitas adalah polysemy (17), homonymy (4), indefinite referring expression (1), anaphora (1), equivocal phrasing (3), dan context (3). Dalam tiga tipe ambiguitas tersebut, lexical adalah tipe yang paling banyak digunakan di pokok berita sedangkan polysemy adalah penyebab ambiguitas yang paling banyak ditemukan di pokok-pokok berita The Jakarta Post. Selain itu, tingkat keterbacaan pada pokok-pokok berita ini adalah less readable. Akhirnya, berdasarkan hasil penelitian, diharapkan penelitian ini dapat memberikan kontribusi yang berarti kepada para pembaca dan penelitian dapat memberikan informasi tambahan untuk peneliti-peneliti berkaitan dengan ambiguitas. |

The research entitled “An Analysis of Ambiguity in the News Headlines of The Jakarta Post” is concerned to identify the types and the cause of ambiguity as reflected by the news headlines, and to find out the readability of ambiguous news headlines of The Jakarta Post. The researcher used a qualitative method in analyzing the data. The data were the news headlines of the Jakarta Post Edition August 2015. To answer the data, the researcher used a data sheet that contained the data of the news headlines, types of ambiguity, and the cause of ambiguity. The researcher also used questionnaire, which was given by the researcher to the respondents to analyze readability level of ambiguous headlines. In analyzed the types and the cause of ambiguity, the researcher used Kreidler’s theory. The result shows that there are three types and six causes of ambiguity found in the news headlines of The Jakarta Post. The types of ambiguity are lexical (21), referential (2), and grammatical (6), while the causes of ambiguity are polysemy (17), homonymy (4), indefinite referring expression (1), anaphora (1), equivocal phrasing (3), and context of ambiguity (3). In three types of ambiguity, lexical is the most dominant types used in the headline, and polysemy is the most cause of ambiguity found in the news headlines of The Jakarta Post. Meanwhile, the readability level is less readable. Finally, with regard to the result of the research, it is expected that this research contributes great significances to the reader, and the research can give additional information for the researchers dealing with ambiguity. |
