Kata Kunci: Genre, Teks Deskriptif, Teks Report, Artikel Penelitian yang berjudul Comparative Study of Genre Characteristics between Description and Report Text in Discovery News ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan perbedaan antara teks deskriptif and teks report dengan mengidentifikasi karakteristik dari masing masing jenis teks tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif. Data yang digunakan yaitu artikel bergenre deskriptif and report yang diambil dari website Discovery News. Data dianalisis menggunakan teori genre dari Hammond. Penelitian ini menunjukan 26 teks deskriptif dan 56 teks report yang terbit pada bulan Desember 2015. Perbedaan yang muncul diantara keduanya dapat dilihat dari segi tujuan, struktur dan pola grammatikalnya. Objek dalam teks deskriptif lebih spesifik daripada teks report, tetapi teks report memiliki penjelasan yang lebih detail daripada teks deskriptif. Teks deskriptif berfokus pada penggambaran mengenai karakteristik secara khusus yang dimiliki oleh objek tersebut yang membuatnya berbeda dari objek lainnya, sedangkan teks report menjelaskan suatu fenomena secara detail mengenai fungsinya, kebiasaannya, atau sebab akibat dari suatu fenomena. Dari segi pola grammatikalnya, penggunaan simple present tense memiliki fungsi yang khusus. Hal tersebut menunjukan bahwa informasi yang disajikan dalam teks report berlaku lebih lama daripada teks deskriptif. Teks deskriptif juga cenderung menggunakan deskriptif adjektif, sedangkan teks report cenderung menggunakan istilah teknis. |

Keywords: Genre, Description Text, Report Text, Article The research entitled Comparative Study of Genre Characteristics between Descriptive and Report Text in Discovery News is aimed at describing the differences between description and report texts by identifying genre characteristics of each text. This study used qualitative method. The main data were description and report text articles which were taken from Discovery News website published in December 2015. The data were analyzed by using genre theory from Hammond. The result reveals that there are 26 description texts and 56 report texts published by Discovery News in December 2015. The differences between description and report texts are seen in social function, schematic structure and grammatical pattern of the text. The object of description text is more specific than report text, but from the explanation, the report text is more detail than description text.Description text also focuses more on specific characteristics of the object that makes it different from other, on the other hand, report text focuses on the behavior, function and the cause and effect of the phenomena. From the grammatical pattern of the text, the use of simple present tense has particular function. It shows that the information in report text can be used for longer time than description text. Description text also tends to use descriptive adjective to support the description, while report text uses technical vocabulary and long nominal group to compact the information. |
