Agus Sapto N, M.Ed., TESOL Pentingnya mempelajari materi Bahasa Inggris dengan Tujuan Khusus bagi siswa kelas tiga jurusan nautika yaitu untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan siswa tentang materi khusus yang diajarkan oleh guru, untuk meningkatkan kemampuan Bahasa Inggris siswa dan untuk membantu siswa yang siap dalam bidang pekerjaan. Fokus utama dalam penelitian ini yaitu pemeriksaan mengenai materi Bahasa Inggris dengan Tujuan Khusus untuk siswa Maritim (Studi kasus pada siswa kelas 3 jurusan nautika di SMK-Sekolah Pelayaran Menengah Nasional Purwokerto, pada tahun ajaran 2014/2015. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti mengumpulkan data berdasarkan dari hasil observasi, kuesioner, interview dan dokumentasi. Oleh karena itu, peneliti menggunakan metode triangulasi untuk validasi data. Kemudian, data tersebut dianalisis melalui data reduksi, data display, pemberian kesimpulan, dan verifikasi. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif, sebagaimana dalam penelitian ini, metode deskriptif kualitatif diterapkan untuk menganalisis data. Hasil dari analisa data menunjukkan bahwa materi Bahasa Inggris dengan Tujuan Khusus untuk siswa kelas tiga nautika khususnya kelas A dan D sama. Materi tersebut berasal dari buku acuan yang digunakan oleh guru seperti buku karangan Tony Grice, Kamus maritim dan buku tentang Organisasi Maritim Internasional. Dalam hal ini, guru mengajarkan materi-materi khusus yang sesuai dengan level siswa. Kemudian terdapat tiga keuntungan materi tersebut untuk siswa kelas tiga jurusan nautika. Pertama, materi tersebut dapat dijadikan sebagai bekal masa depan siswa. Kedua, materi tersebut dapat meningkatkan pengetahuan siswa tentang ilmu kemaritiman dan meningkatkan kemampuan Bahasa Inggris mereka. Ketiga, materi tersebut bermanfaat untuk dipelajari siswa nautika karena guru menggunakan sumber yang teruji dan diakui orisinalitasnya. Sedangkan kerugian materi ini hanya terdapat dalam penempatan dalam penggunaan materi tersebut. Kemudian, guru menggunakan metode penerapan secara langsung dalam menyampaikan materi tersebut untuk siswa kelas tiga nautika karena ini merupakan metode pengajaran yang lebih efektif dari metode ceramah dan sesuai dengan tingkatan siswa. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, peneliti menyarankan bahwa baik guru maupun siswa seharusnya memiliki kerjasama yang baik dalam proses belajar-mengajar agar materi ESP tersebut dapat dipahami dan diterapkan dengan baik oleh siswa. |

Agus Sapto N, M.Ed., TESOL The importance of learning English for Specific Purposes (ESP) materials for the 3rd grade nautical students is able to increase the students’ knowledge about particular material taught by the teacher, to increase the students’ English competence, and to help the students get ready in the job field. The main concern of this research is Exploring English for Specific Purposes (ESP) Materials for Maritime Students (A Case Study of the 3rd Grade Nautical Students at SMK-Sekolah Pelayaran Menengah Nasional Purwokerto in Academic Year of 2014/2015). In this research, the researcher took the data from observation, questionnaire, interview, and documentation. Therefore, the researcher used triangulation method to validate the data. Then, the data were analyzed by using qualitative ways; including data reduction, data display, data analysis, conclusion, and verification. Kind of this research is descriptive qualitative, as in this research, descriptive qualitative method was applied to analyze the data. Results of data analysis showed that the ESP materials for the 3rd grade nautical students, class A and D, were same. The materials were from teacher’s references such as from Tony Grice’s book, Maritime Dictionary, and International Maritime Organization. The teacher taught the specific materials as suitable as student’s level. There were three advantages of ESP materials for the 3rd grade students of nautical majoring such as the materials could be used as students’ provisions in the future, ESP materials could increase students’ knowledge about maritime science and students’ English skills. ESP materials were useful to be learnt by nautical students because the teacher used some references that had been tested and recognized its originality. Meanwhile, disadvantage of ESP material was only on the place where this material was used. Then, the teacher used direct application method in delivering the ESP materials for the students because this was an effective teaching method rather than speech method, and it matched to the students’ level. Based on the result of the research, the researcher suggests that both the teacher and the students should have a good cooperation in teaching-learning process in order to make the ESP materials understood and applied well by the students. |
