Kata Kunci: Fatis, Bentuk Fatis, Film The Fault in Our Stars. Terdapat beberapa ujaran yang digunakan untuk membangun dan mempertahankan interaksi sosial. Terkadang ujaran tersebut tidak perlu diucapkan namun ujaran tersebutdapat memecahkan keheningan. Ujaran tersebut disebut dengan Fatis. Penelitian yang berjudul “An Analysis of Phatic Communion in the Movie The Fault in Our Stars” ini bertujuan untuk: (1) menganalisis bentuk fatis; (2) menganalisis alasan mengapa fatis digunakan oleh pemeran utama danpembantu dalam film The Fault in Our Stars. Data yang digunakan berasal dari film The Fault in Our Stars. Populasi pada penelitian ini adalah semua ujaran dalam film The Fault in Our Stars dan sampel dipilih dari ujaran yang mengandung fatis yang digunakan oleh pemeran utama dan pembantu dalam film The Fault in Our Stars. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif untuk menganalisis data utama. Pendekatan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan dan teori sosiolinguistik untuk menjawab pertanyaan penelitian. Penelitian ini diawali dengan menganalisis bentuk dari fatis dengan mengacu pada teori Aitchison. Kemudian, alasan mengapa pemeran utama dan pembantu dalam film The Fault in Our Stars menggunakan fatis dianalisis menggunakan teori Holmes. Penelitian ini menghasilkan 2 temuan. Temuanyang pertama adalah bentuk dari fatis. Jumlah keseluruhan data dalam penelitian ini adalah 55 data. Bentuk fatis yang pertama ritual words that are exchanged when people meet yang terdiri dari 18 data. Bentuk fatis yang kedua adalah meaningless or missunderstood words. Terdapat 5 data yang termasuk dalam bentuk tersebut. Terdapat 22 data yang termasuk dalam supportive chat. Bentuk fatis yang terakhir adalah meaningless or misunderstood words yang terdiri dari 10 data. Kemudian, dimension of sociolinguistics digunakan untuk menganalisis alasan mengapa pemeran utama dan pembantu dalam film The Fault in Our Stars menggunakan fatis. Hasil penelitian ini diharapkan dapat menambah pengetahuan tentang fatis. Pembaca yang tertarik untuk meneliti fatis dapat menganalisis objek lebih dalam. Peneliti juga berharap kepada peneliti lain yang akan melakukan penelitian dalam bidang sosiolinguistik untuk memilih objek atau teori lain yang dapat didiskusikan lebih lanjut. |

Keywords: Phatic Communion, Forms of phatic communion, The Fault in Our Stars movie. There are some utterances used for establishing and maintaining social interaction. Sometimes it is not important to say but this can break the silence and create the mutual situation. This kind of utterance is called phatic communion. The research entitled “An Analysis of Phatic Communion in the Movie The Fault in Our Stars.” aims to: (1) analyze forms of phatic communion; (2) analyze the reason why phatic communion is used by main and supporting characters in The Fault in Our Stars. The data were collected from the movie entitled The Fault in Our Stars. The population of this reserach were all the utterances in the movie The Fault in Our Stars and the sample were taken from the utterances expressed by main and supporting characters containing phatic communion in the movie entitled The Fault in Our Stars. This research used qualitative method for analyzing the main data. This research applied sociolinguistics approach and theory to answer the research questions. At first, the research analyzed the forms of phatic communion by using Aitchison’s theory. Then, the reason why the main and supporting characters use phatic communion were analyzed by using Holmes’ theory. There are 2 findings that are revealed in this research. The first one is the forms of phatic communion. The total number of data in this research are 55 data.The first form is ritual words that are exchanged when people meet which contains 18 data. The second is standard topic of conversation. There are 5 data belong to this form. 22 data are found in the form of supportive chat. The last is meaningless or misunderstood words which contain 10 data. Then, the dimension of sociolinguistics is used to analyze the reason why main and supporting characters in the movie The Fault in Our Stars use forms of phatic communion. The result of this research are expected to enrich the knowledge of the readers about phatic communion. Furthermore, the other readers who have interest in conducting the research about phatic communion can analyze the object more deeply. Meanwhile, the researcher also expects other researchers who want to conduct the research in sociolinguistics field to choose another object or theory that can be discussed more deeply. |
