Penelitian yang berjudul “Fashion Consumption Portrayed in Sophie Kinsella’s Shopaholic Abroad” bertujuan untuk menemukan permasalahan mengenai konsumsi fashion dalam novel tersebut. Fashion berhubungan erat dengan kehidupan manusia karena setiap hari setiap orang pasti mengenakan pakaian. Sumber data utama penelitian ini adalah chick lit berjudul Shopaholic Abroad karya Sophie Kinsella yang dianalisis menggunakan teori kecanduan untuk menemukan bagaimana konsumsi fashion digambarkan dan hal-hal yang menyebabkan kecanduan tokoh utama pada fashion.
Analisis penelitian ini disajikan menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif yang berfokus pada narasi dan dialog di novel tersebut. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan teknik studi pustaka yang mana buku, esai, artikel, dan laman internet menjadi sumber data yang mendukung penelitian ini. Kemudian, data yang berhubungan dengan konsumsi fashion dan hal-hal yang menyebabkan kecanduan tokoh utamapada fashion ditampilkan.Data tersebut lalu dianalisis menggunakan teori kecanduan.
Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada tiga tokoh yang berkaitan dengan penelitian ini, yaitu tokoh utama, Rebecca Bloomwood, dan dua tokoh pendukung, Luke Brandon dan Susan Cleath-Stuart. Rebecca Bloomwood menggambarkan konsumsi fashion melalui pakaian yang ia kenakan dan beli. Sedangkan Luke Brandon dan Susan Cleath-Stuart menggambarkan konsumsi fashion melalui pakaian yang mereka kenakan.Selanjutnya, menurut teori kecanduan, ada dua alasan yang menyebabkan kecanduan tokoh utama pada fashion, yaitu pelarian dan kurangnya kepercayaan diri. Kecanduan dan kurangnya rasa percaya diri mendorong tokoh utama untuk berbelanja.

The research entitled “Fashion Consumption Portrayed in Sophie Kinsella’s Shopaholic Abroad” is aimed to find out fashion consumption issue that occur in the novel since fashion is closely related to human’s life. People wear clothes every day. The main data source is a chick lit entitled Shopaholic Abroad by Sophie Kinsella which is analysed through addiction theory to find out how fashion consumption is portrayed and the causes of the main character’s addiction towards fashion.
The analysis is presented by using descriptive qualitative method that focuses on the narrations and dialogues in Sophie Kinsella’s Shopaholic Abroad. The research applied library research to collect the data which allows the collection of the data from books, essays, articles, and internet websites as the data sources to support the research. Next, the important data related to fashion consumption and the causes of the main character’s addiction towards fashion were listed. And finally, the data were analysed by addiction theory.
As for the results, there are three significant characters that portrayed fashion consumption, i.e. the main character, Rebecca Bloomwood, and two supporting characters, Luke Brandon and Susan Cleath-Stuart. Rebecca Bloomwood portrayed fashion consumption through the clothes that she wore and bought. Whereas Luke Brandon and Susan Cleath-Stuart portrayed fashion consumption through the clothes they wore. Moreover, according to addiction theory, there are two main causes of the main character’s addiction towards fashion, i.e. avoidance and insecurity. Avoidance and insecurity push the main character to shop.
