The research entitled “Cawelty’s Detective Story Formula Depicted In Jed Rubenfeld The Interpretation Of Murder” is aimed at finding out the situation, characters and relationship, setting, and plot to reveal the case of murder in novel The Interpretation of Murder by Jed Rubenfeld. This research uses structuralism approach and John Cawelty’s theories. Furthermore, the analysis is arranged using descriptive qualitative method.

There are several steps in analyzing this novel. First, reading the novel to understand the content and to collect the data. Second, identifying texts which have situation, characters and relationship, setting and plot. The last step is explaining the situation, characters and relationship, setting and plot, and the situations supported by many proofs in the novel and relating them to Cawelty’s formula.

Based on the analysis, this research found many evidence that fulfill the requirements of classical detective story in the novel The Interpretation of Murder. The situation is a form of crimes done by Banwell against Malley, and Clara’s scenario that leads to attempt murder. Characters and relationships show the role of each character related to other characters and cases. Then, the setting displays rooms isolated from the society, such, Travertine Wing's, Gramercy Park and Caisson. Finally, the plot begins the introduction of the detective, crimes and clues, investigation, announcement of the solution, then explanation of the solution, and denouement. Therefore, The Interpretation of Murder can be said as a detective novel. Based on the evidences that fulfill the requirements of classical detective story, this novel can be categorized as a detective story as mentioned by John G Cawelty.
