| Abstrak (Bhs. Indonesia) | Selat Makassar merupakan perairan yang berada diantara dua pulau besar dengan perbedaan khas faktor fisika, biologi, dan geologi. Selain itu, perairan ini dialiri oleh Arlindo yang membawa aliran air dari Samudera Pasifik, sehingga akan menyebarkan sedimen dan diduga sebagian akan terendapkan di Selat Makassar. Proses tektonik diduga juga mempengaruhi karakteristik sedimen di selat tersebut. Oleh sebab itu, diketahui sedimen di Selat Makassar berasal dari berbagai sumber. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan untuk mengetahui sumber sedimen dominan dan faktor penyebab dominansi sumber sedimen tersebut di Selat Makassar. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada bulan Agustus – Oktober 2014 di Laboratorium Geologi Laut P2O-LIPI. Metode pengambilan sampel secara coring pada 20 stasiun yang ditentukan secara acak. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif dengan penentuan jenis sedimen mengacu pada skala Wentworth, dan penamaan sedimen didasarkan pada klasifikasi Shepard serta komposisi sedimen dihitung menggunakan skema estimasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan sedimen di Selat Makassar secara umum berasal dari laut. Hal tersebut didasarkan pada persentase komposisi sedimen tertinggi adalah bahan organik laut seperti foraminifera dan radiolaria. Selain itu, jenis mineral dominan yang ditemukan adalah kuarsa, dimana kuarsa merupakan mineral umum yang terbentuk dari pembekuan lava. Sedimen laut ini juga disebarkan oleh arus pada saat angin muson timur. |
| Abtrak (Bhs. Inggris) | Makassar Strait waters was located between two large islands which have specific differences in physical, biological, and geological factor. Moreover, these waters drained by water mass from the Pacific Ocean called Indonesian Throughflow (ITF, Arlindo), it would be spreaded and be partially deposited the sediment in the Makassar Strait. Tectonic processes occurance also affected sediment characteristic in it strait. Therefore, it was known in the Makassar Strait sediments originated from various sources. This study was carried out to determine the dominant sediment source and causing factors the sediment source dominance in the Makassar Strait. The research was conducted in August – October 2014 in Marine Geology P2O-LIPI Laboratory. The random sampling method was used, performed with core tools at 20 selected sites. Data were analyzed by descriptions which refers to the Wentworth scale determination, sediment naming was based on Shepard classification and sediment composition was calculated with the estimation scheme. The results showed the sediment in the Makassar Strait was generally originated from marine. It was based on the highest sediment composition percentage was marine organic material such as foraminifera and radiolarians. Additionally, the mineral dominant type to be found was quartz, which was a common mineral formed from the freezing lava. Marine sediments was also spreaded by east monsoon currents. |
