Penelitian ini berjudul “Mitch’s Motive in Pursuing a Success as Reflected in John Grisham’s The Firm”. Penelitian ini menjelaskan motivasi karakter utama bernama Mitchell Y. McDeere dalam mencapai kesuksesan. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk memberikan penjelasan bagaimana mimpi dapat menjadi motivasi bagi karakter utama dan untuk menemukan jenis kebutuhan yang telah dipenuhi oleh karakter utama dalam proses mencapai kesuksesan.
	Penelitian  ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Sumber data penelitian adalah novel The Firm karangan John Grisham yang unsur sastranya dianalisis menggunakan pendekatan psikologi dan teori motivasi manusia oleh Abraham Maslow. Dalam teori motivasi manusia, peneliti mencari data tentang motivasi yang tercermin pada diri karakter utama kemudian menganalisisnya dan memberikan penjelasan tentang kebutuhan yang telah dipenuhi oleh karakter utama menggunakan Diagram Kebutuhan Maslow. 
	Setelah melakukan penelitian ini, peneliti menemukan bahwa latar belakang miskin dan berasal dari keluarga yang broken home tidak membuktikan bahwa Mitch akan mempunyai masa depan yang buruk. Dengan motivasi, kerja keras dan beberapa usaha, Mitch akhirnya dapat merubah takdirnya untuk mempunyai kehidupan yang lebih baik. Dalam penelitian ini, terdapat tujuh macam kebutuhan yang telah dipenuhi oleh Mitch selama perjalanannya mencapai kesuksesan. Penelitian ini diharapkan bisa memberikan kemudahan pada pengajar Bahasa Inggris, mahasiswa, dan pembaca yang ingin melakukan penelitian di bidang sastra.

The research is entitled “Mitch’s Motive in Pursuing a Success as Reflected in John Grisham’s The Firm”. It describes the motivation of the main character, Mitchell Y. McDeere, to pursue his success. The purpose of this research is to give more information how his dream can be a motivation of the main character and to find out kinds of needs fulfilled by the main character in the process of pursuing a success.
	This researched used a qualitative method. The data source of this study is John Grisham’s The Firm in which the literary elements are analyzed by psychological approach and a theory of human motivation by Abraham Maslow. In the theory of human motivation, the researcher collects data about motivation as reflected in the main character then analyzes and give explanation the needs fulfilled by the main character using Hierarchy of Needs’ Maslow.
	After conducting the research, the researcher concludes that being a poor and broken home kid does not mean that Mitch will have a dark future.  With his motivation, hard work and some efforts, he finally able to change his fate to have a better life. In this research, there are seven kinds of needs fulfilled by Mitch in his life journey in pursuing his American Dream. This research is expected to give benefit to the English teachers, students, and the reader who are interested in conducting the research in the field of literature.
