Keywords: writing skill, recount text Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan kesalahan tata bahasa terutama kata kerja lampau dalam menulis teks recount dan untuk menggambarkan permasalahan siswa dalam menggunakan kata kerja lampau. Setelah mengidentifikasi masalah siswa hasilnya dapat membantu guru serta siswa untuk meningkatkan proses belajar-mengajar. Peneliti memilih siswa kelas VIII MTS Ma'arif 2 Paguyangan, Brebes. Jumlah siswa 107. Terdiri dari 3 kelas. Setelah ]menentukan populasi dalam penelitian ini, sampel diambil 33 siswa dari populasi. Sampel ini diambil menggunakan random sampling. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif. Peneliti menggunakan kuesioner untuk mengetahui masalah siswa dalam menggunakan kata kerja lampau dalam menulis teks recount. Peneliti juga mewawancarai guru bahasa Inggris sebagai sumber data untuk menjawab pertanyaan kedua. Dan, peneliti akan menggunakan beberapa dokumen untuk mengetahui informasi tentang MTS Ma'arif 2 Paguyangan, Brebes. Dokumennya berupa tulisan-tulisan teks recount siswa. Setelah menganalisis kesalahan kalimat yang ditulis oleh siswa kelas delapan MTS Ma'arif 2 Paguyangan, Brebes, peneliti mendapat total kesalahan yang dibuat siswa. Hal ini diklasifikasikan sebagai 13 kesalahan dalam ommision, 4 kesalahan addition, 18 kesalahan dalam misformation dan 31 kesalahan dalam misordering. Peneliti menyarankan supaya dalam mengajar bahasa Inggris terkait dengan kata kerja lampau, guru harus memberikan penjelasan yang lebih mudah dipahami agar siswa lebih tertarik untuk belajar bahasa Inggris. Dan guru harus memberikan latihan-latihan menulis untuk siswa. Dan melengkapi fasilitas seperti laboratorium untuk proses belajar bahasa Inggris. Sehingga, para siswa dapat dengan mudah belajar bahasa Inggris dan lebih menikmati proses pembelajarannya.

Keywords: writing skill, recount text The research is aimed to describe the grammatical errors especially simple past tense verb in writing recount text verbs and to describe the students’ problems in using simple past tense verb. After identifying the students’ problems, the result could help the teachers as well as the students to improve in the learning-teaching process. The researcher chooses the students of the eighth grade students of MTS Ma’arif 2 Paguyangan, Brebes as the population. The number of the students is 107 students. There were 3 classes. After determining the population in this research, the samples are 33 students from the population. They are taken using random sampling. This study uses a qualitative approach; particularly descriptive text. The researcher uses a questionnaire to investigate the students’ problems in using past tense in writing recount text. The researcher uses interview for the English teachers as the sources of the data for answering the second question of the research. The researcher used some documents to find out the information about MTS Ma’arif 2 Paguyangan, Brebes. The documents are the writings of recount text of the students. After analyzing the error sentences written by the Eighth Grade Students of MTS Ma’arif 2 Paguyangan, Brebes, the researcher got the total errors that the students made. It was classified into13 errors of omission, 4 errors of addition, 18 errors of misformation and 31 errors of misordering. The researcher would like to suggest that in teaching English, related to past tense, the teacher should give easier explanation in order to make the students more interested in learning English. In addition, in writing class, the teacher should give writing exercises to the students. The facilities as the laboratory of English learning should be added. So, the students could learn English easily and the process can be more enjoyable.
