Skripsi ini berjudul The Effect of English Wall Magazine as a Medium to Improve Students’ Writing Skill (A Case Study of Tenth Grade Students in SMA Diponegoro 1 Purwokerto, Academic Year 2011/2012). Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah (1) untuk mengetahui kondisi kemampuan menulis siswa kelas X SMA Diponegoro Purwokerto saat ini, (2) untuk mengetahui efek penggunaan majalah dinding berbahasa Inggris sebagai media untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa, (3) untuk mengetahui persepsi guru dan siswa mengenai teknik penggunaan majalah dinding berbahasa Inggris sebagai media untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimental. Post-test dilakukan untuk mengetahui kondisi kemampuan writing siswa sesudah diberi perlakuan. Selanjutnya t-test dihitung untuk mengetahui korelasi antara kelompok eksperimen dan kontrol. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di SMA Diponegoro Purwokerto, dengan siswa kelas sepuluh tahun akademik 2011/2012 sebagai sample-nya.
Berdasarkan hasil pasca-tes, dapat terlihat bahwa pada kelas kontrol, terdapat enam siswa (60%) dikategorikan sebagai cukup, sedangkan sisanya (40%) termasuk dalam kategori buruk. Sedangkan pada kelas eksperimen, terdapat tujuh siswa (70%) yang termasuk dalam kategori cukup, dua siswa (20%) dikategorikan sebagai buruk, dan satu siswa (10%) termasuk dalam kategori baik. Lalu nilai t dihitung dengan menggunakan program SPSS. Hasilnya adalah 0.821. kemudian berdasarkan kuisioner, tujuh siswa (70%) setuju bahwa penggunaan majalah dinding efektif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan writing mereka, sedangkan sisanya (30%) tidak setuju.
Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini adalah: (1) kemampuan writing siswa termasuk dalam kategori cukup, (2) dari hasil t-test, dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan majalah dinding berbahasa Inggris mempunyai pengaruh yang tidak signifikan terhadap kemampuan writing siswa, (3) guru Bahasa Inggris dan para murid memberikan respon yang positif atas penggunaan majalah berbahasa Inggris sebagai media meningkatkan kemampuan writing siswa.

The research is entitled The Effect of English Wall Magazine as a Medium to Improve Students’ Writing Skill (A Case Study of Tenth Grade Students in SMA Diponegoro 1 Purwokerto, Academic Year 2011/2012). The aims of this thesis are (1) to find out the present condition of writing skill of the tenth grade students of SMA Diponegoro Purwokerto, (2) to find out the effect of the use of English wall magazine as a medium to improve students’ writing skill, (3) to find out the perception of the teacher and students to the technique of using wall magazine to improve students writing skill. This research is an experimental design. Post-test were conducted to discover the condition of students’ writing skill after the treatment. The result of the test then calculated with t-test to gain the correlation between the experimental and control group. The research was held at SMA Diponegoro Purwokerto, with the tenth grade students in academic year 2011/2012 as the sample.
Based on the pre-test result, it could be seen that in the control class, there were six students (60%) categorized as fair, while the rest of the students (40%) were in poor category. While in experimental class, there were seven students (70%) who were in fair category, two students (20%) were categorized as poor, and one student (10%) was belonging to good category. Next, by employing SPSS progam, the t-value was calculated. The result was 0.821. Then based on the questionnaire, seven students (70%) agreed that the use of wall magazine was effective to improve their writing skill, while the rest (30%) did not agree.
The conclusions of the research are: (1) the students’ writing skill was in fair category, (2) from the t-test result, it could be concluded that the use of English wall magazine was not significantly affect the students’ writing skill, (3) the English teacher and most of the experimental class gave positive respond to the use of wall magazine as a medium to improve the tenth grade students’ writing skill. This research is expected to be beneficial for the readers, mainly the students of English Department, as a reference for them who are interested in conducting a research in the field of applied linguistic.
