Penelitian ini menjelaskan sebuah pembelajaran yang membahas tentang adjacency pairs yang terdapat dalam novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Penilitian ini bertujuanuntuk mencari kategori dari adjacency pairs yang ada di novel  The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, dan menganalisadjacencypairs yang ada dalam novel tersebut berdasarkan karakteristikdari teori Schegloff & Sacks.
Metode dari penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Peneliti menggunakan metode ini untuk menganalisa Adjacency Pairs di dalam Novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz berdasarkan teori dari Schegloff & Sacks.
Setelah melakukan analisis, peneliti menemukan 6 kategori dari Adjacency Pairs yaitu Question- Answer, Greeting- Greeting, Complaint- Apology, Request- Compliance, Offer- Acceptance/Rejection, Blame- Assesment. Semua Adjacency Pairs yang ada dalam novel tersebut telah memenuhi persyaratan/ karakteristiknya.
Penelititan ini diharapkan dapat memberi kontribusi di dalam penelitian Linguistik khususnya pada Pragmatik mengenai Adjacency Pairs. Sebagai tambahan, penelitian ini mungkin dapat berguna sebagai referensi untuk peneliti lain yang tertarik dengan Adjacency Pairs

This research describes a study that investigate adjacency pairs found in the novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The goals of the research areto find out the categories of adjacency pairs in the novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz written by L. Frank Baum and to analyze of adjacency pairs based on Schegloff & Sacks characteristic in the novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz written by L. Frank Baum.
The method of the Research wasqualitative descriptive. The Researcher used this method to analyze adjacency pairs in the novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum according to Schegloff & Sack’s theory.The dialog in the novel was analyzed to figure out in what category of adjacency pairs it belonged and whether all the requirement have included in the dialog.
After conducting the analysis, the researcher founds 6 category of adjacency pairs,they are Question- Answer, Greeting- Greeting, Complaint- Apology, Request- Compliance, Offer- Acceptance/Rejection, Blame- Assesment. All the adjacency pairs in the novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz already met the requirements namely adjacent, produced by different speaker, ordered as the first part and second part and typed (a particular first part require a particular second).
The thesis is expected to contribute to linguisticresearch especially in pragmatics dealing with adjacency pairs. In addition, the research may be useful as references for other researchers who are interested in adjacency pairs.
