Penelitian berjudul Receptive Language Disorder of the Autistic Savant Character in the “Rain Man” Movie bertujuan untuk memperoleh pemahaman dan penjelasan yang rinci mengenai gejala-gejala gangguan berbahasa reseptif, tipe-tipe respon yang diproduksi penderitanya, serta efek dari gangguan berbahasa reseptif terhadap penderitanya dan tokoh-tokoh lain dalam film tersebut. Data dari penelitian ini adalah seluruh ujaran Raymond yang menunjukkan gangguan berbahasa reseptif. Kemudian data tersebut dianalisis menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Setelah melakukan analisis, diketahui bahwa terdapat 25 data total. Data ini terdiri dari 8 data yang menunjukkan Raymond tidak mendengarkan lawan bicaranya ketika diajak berbicara. Ketika Raymond menunjukan gejala ini, dia menghasilkan 5 respon absurd, 2 respon aneh, 1 respon yang relevan tetapi sangat tidak sopan untuk diujarkan. 3 data menunjukkan Raymond tidak bisa memahami makna kalimat secara implisit. Ketika Raymond menunjukkan gejala ini, dia menghasilkan 1 respon aneh, 1 respon yang relevan tetapi sangat tidak sopan untuk diujarkan, 1 respon marjinal. Selain itu, 12 data menunjukkan Raymond membeo. Ketika Raymond menunjukkan gejala ini, dia menghasilkan 8 respon absurd, 2 respon aneh, 2 respon yang relevan tetapi sangat tidak sopan untuk diujarkan. Terakhir, terdapat 2 data menunjukkan Raymond kesulitan dalam menghubungkan petunjuk nonverbal untuk memahami informasi linguistik. Ketika Raymond menunjukkan gejala ini, Raymond hanya menghasilkan 2 respon absurd.
Gangguan berbahasa reseptif yang diderita Raymond juga memberikan beberapa efek buruk. Hubungan Raymond dan Charlie, memburuk karena sering terjadi kesalahpahaman ketika mereka bercakap-cakap. Hak Raymond untuk mendapatkan warisan lebih banyak juga menjadi terbatas. Selain itu, kesempatan Raymond untuk bergaul di masyarakat sangat terbatas.

The research entitled Receptive Language Disorder of the Autistic Savant Character in the “Rain Man” Movie is aimed to get an understanding and detailed explanation about the symptoms of receptive language disorder, types of response produced by the sufferer, and the effects of receptive language disorder toward the sufferer and the other characters in the movie. The data of this research are all of Raymond’s utterances which show receptive language disorder. Then, the data are analyzed by descriptive qualitative method. After conducting the analysis, it knows that there are 25 total data. It consists of 8 data which show  Raymond seems not to give any attention when the other person talks to him. When Raymond shows this symptom, Raymond produces 5 absurd response, 2 odd response, 1 relevant but not very polite response. There are 3 data which show the symptom that Raymond has inability to understand implicit meaning in sentence. When Raymond shows this symptom, Raymond produces 1 odd response, 1 relevant but not very polite response, 1 marginal response. Then, there are 12 data which show that Raymond does echolalia. When Raymond shows this symptom, Raymond produces 8 absurd response, 2 relevant but not very polite response, 2 marginal response. The last, there are 2 data which show that Raymond has difficulty integrating nonverbal cues to help interpret linguistics input. When Raymond shows this symptom, Raymond produces just 2 absurd response. There are three effects of receptive language disorder suffered by Raymond in this movie. Firstly, it gives bad effect in the relationship between the sufferer, his sibling, and the other people as interlocutors in this movie. Secondly, it gives bad effect to the sufferer’s earning power. Thirdly, it limits the sufferer’s opportunities to interact with the society.
