Penelitian ini berjudul “An Analysis of Language Metafunctions in the
Opinion Text of Jakarta Post “License to Kill and the Sin of Pride”. Penelitian ini
bertujuan untuk menemukan struktur mood, transitiviti, dan tema pada teks Opini
di Jakarta Post dan menemukan arti teks Opini berdasarkan struktur mood,
transitiviti, dan tema pada teks Opini di Jakarta Post edisi 9 April 2013.
Penelitian ini membahas mengenai kajian wacana yang merujuk pada
tingkatan arti lexico-grammar, tingkatan yang memfokuskan hubungan arti dalam
menjelaskan teks. Penelititan ini menganalisis metafungsi bahasa pada teks opini
berdasarkan teori Halliday. Terdapat tiga metafungsi bahasa untuk di analisis,
yaitu: fungsi ideasional, interpersonal, dan textual.
Selanjutnya, penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif dan
total datanya berjumlah 1 teks Opini (39 klausa) yang ditemukan di Jakarta Post
online pada 9 April 2013. Selain itu, penelitian ini menggunakan beberapa
tahapan dalam pengumpulan data: pertama, peneliti mencari data dari
www.jakartapost.com, kedua, peneliti mendapatkan teks Opini ‘License to kill and
the sin of pride’ pada 9 April 2013.
Hasil penelitian menunjukan arti teks Opini berdasarkan struktur mood,
transitiviti, dan tema. Proposisi deklaratif adalah yang paling dominan dari
struktur mood. Itu menunjukan bahwa penulis hanya memberi informasi di dalam
opininya; sistem transitiviti didominasi oleh proses relasional attributif. Itu
menunjukan bahwa penulis hanya mendeskripsikan informasi atau hanya
memberikan deskripsi terhadap apa yang dikatakan atau ditulis; tema topik lazim
adalah yang sering muncul di fungsi tekstual. Itu menunjukan bahwa penulis
menggunakan tema sebagai subjek klausa dan berorientasi pada partisipan.

The research entitled “An Analysis of Language Metafunctions in the
Opinion Text of Jakarta Post “License to Kill and the Sin of Pride” is aimed at
finding out the structure of mood, transitivity, and theme in the Opinion text of
Jakarta Post and finding out the meaning of Opinion text based on the structure of
mood, transitivity, and theme in the Opinion text of Jakarta Post on April, 9 2013.
The research belongs to discourse study which refers to the level of
meaning above the lexico-grammar, the level concerned with relations of meaning
across a text. The lexico-grammar is about using word, morphology, group, or
clause in expressing language metafunctions and social function of text. This
research analyzed the language metafunction in the Opinion text based on
Halliday’s theory. There are 3 kinds of language metafunction to analyze i.e.:
interpersonal, ideational, and textual meaning.
Then, the research belongs to descriptive qualitative method and total
number of data is one opinion text (39 clauses) which has been found in the
Jakarta Post online. The research used several steps to get the data: first, the
researcher looked for the data from www.jakartapost.com, second, the researcher
got the opinion text ‘License to Kill and Sin of Pride’ on April, 9 2013.
The result shows that the meaning of text opinion is based on the structure
of mood, transitivity, and theme. Declarative proposition is the most dominant in
mood structure. It shows the writer just gives information in his/her opinion;
transitivity system is dominated by atributive relational process. It also shows that
the writer only describes the information or just gives description towards what
he/she says or writes in his/her opinion; topical unmarked theme often appears in
the text. It reflects the writer uses theme as subject clause and oriented to
participants.
