Penelitian berjudul “An Analysis of Gender Speech Feature Differences between Samantha and Ian in “If Only” Movie” ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan perbedaan ciri- ciri tuturan antara Samanta dan Ian dengan mengidentifikasi ciri- ciri tuturan mereka beserta fungsinya. Fokus penelitian ini adalah fitur tuturan berdasarkan teori Lakoff yang digunakan oleh Samantha dan Ian dalam ujarannya. Sepuluh fitur tuturan menurut  Lakoff antara lain: lexical hedges, tag question, rising intonation on declarative, empty adjective, precise color term, intensifiers, hypercorrect grammar, superpolite form, avoidance of strong swear word, dan emphatic stress. Rancangan penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Penelitian ini mendeskripsikan fitur tuturan yg digunakan oleh Samantha and Ian dalam film If Only. Data dalam penelitian ini adalah kata, frase, clausa, dan kalimat kedua tokoh tersebut. Data tersebut dianalisis dengan menemukan konteks dari ujaran tersebut, lalu mengklasifikasikannya berdasarkan teori Lakoff, kemudian mendeskripsikan fungsi dari penggunaan fitur-fitur tersebut. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada 62 fitur ujaran yang digunakan oleh Samantha dan 33 yang digunakan oleh Ian. Keduanya menggunakan Lexical Hedges, Tag Question, Rising intonation, intensifier, super polite form, avoidance strong swear words, dan emphatic stress, sedangkan Empty adjective hanya digunakan oleh Sam. Hypercorrect grammar dan Precise Color Term tidak ditemukan dalam data. Keduanya lebih banyak menggunakan fitur tuturan yang mencerminkan keraguan dan ketidakpercayaan diri. Penggunaan lexical hedges dan emphatic stress dalam ujaran Sam dan Ian tidak menunjukkan perbedaan yang signifikan karena mereka memproduksi fitur tersebut hampir dalam jumlah dan fungsi yang sama. Mereka menggunakan lexical hedges untuk merefleksikan ketidakyakinan dan masalah dalam komunikasi. Mereka juga menggunakan emphatic stress untuk mempertegas makna ujaran, perbedaanya hanya saja Ian menggunakannya secara lebih emosional. Perbedaan tag question, rising intonation, empty adjectives, intensifiers, super polite form, dan avoidance of strong swear words terlihat jelas karena Sam dan Ian menggunakan fitur tersebut dalam jumlah yang sangat berbeda, dan dalam fungsi yang hampir berbeda. Sam menggunakan fitur tersebut untuk merefleksikan bahasa wanita, seperti kelembutan dan ketidak percayaan diri, sedangkan Ian menggunakannya tidak selalu untuk menunjukkan ketidakyakinan, tetapi penggunaan tersebut terjadi secara situasional. Peneliti berharap penelitian ini dapat mendorong peneliti lain untuk melakukan penelitian dengan topik yang serupa.

The research entitled “An Analysis of Gender Speech Feature Differences between Samantha and Ian in If Only Movie” was aimed at describing the differences of the speech feature between Samantha and Ian in If Only movie by identifying the speech features and their function used by Samantha and Ian. This research focuses on the speech features based on Lakoff’s theory used by Samantha and Ian in If Only movie. There are ten types of speech features proposed by Lakoff: lexical hedges, tag question, rising intonation on declarative, empty adjective, precise color term, intensifiers, hypercorrect grammar, superpolite form, avoidance of strong swear word, and emphatic stress. The design of this research is descriptive qualitative. It describes the speech features used by Samantha and Ian in If Only movie. The data are words, phrases, clauses, and sentences which are used by Samantha and Ian. The data were analyzed firstly by finding the context of the utterance, classifying them into ten types of speech features, and then describing the functional usage of the utterances based on Lakoff’s theory. The result shows that there are 62 speech features used by Samantha and 33 speech features used by Ian. Both of them produced Lexical Hedges, Tag Question, Rising intonation, intensifier, super polite form, avoidance strong swear words, and emphatic stress, while Empty adjective is only produced by Sam. Hypercorrect grammar and precise color term are not found in Sam and Ian’ speech. Both of them applied most of speech features which reflect uncertainty, unconfidence, and avoidance saying something definite. The use of lexical hedges and emphatic stress in Sam and Ian’ speech is not significantly different since they use it in almost the same amount and function. Both of them produced Lexical Hedges to show uncertainty and communication trouble. They also produced Emphatic Stress to strengthen the meaning of the utterance, but the difference is only that Ian used it in more emotional feeling. Meanwhile, the differences of the use tag question, rising intonation, empty adjectives, intensifiers, super polite form, and avoidance of strong swear words can be clearly seen since both of them use those speech features in very different amount and in almost different functions. Sam uses those speech features to show the character of women’s language, such as powerlessness, uncertainty, and lack of confidence, while Ian produced those speech features not always to show uncertainty, but it happens conditionally. The researcher expects this research can stimulate other researchers who are interested in literary works to do similar research topic.
