Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui latar belakang orang memilih menjadi pengemis dan untuk menggambarkan potret kehidupan para pengemis di Kawasan Kecamatan Purwokerto Timur. Teori yang digunakan adalah interaksionisme simbolik Herbert Blumer yang mengatakan setiap orang melakukan sesuatu berdasarkan makna terhadap sesuatu tersebut, makna tersebut terbentuk melalui proses interaksi sosial, dan makna tersebut diyakini dan dimodifikasi, melalui proses interpretatif. Selain itu juga menggunakan teori pengambilan keputusan, Soepranto yang menyatakan bahwa mengambil atau membuat keputusan berarti memilih satu diantara sekian banyak alternatif.Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah kualitatif deskriptif.Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan wawancara mendalam, observasi partisipasi, dan dokumentasi.Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan adanya alasan seseorang memilih menjadi pengemis, tidak hanya karena alasan ekonomi, maupun keterbatasan keahlianakan tetapi juga adanya nilai-nilai yang hayati dan dimaknai oleh para pengemis itu sendiri sehingga menjadikan pekerjaan ini begitu bermakna bagi para pelakunya. Selain itu juga penelitian menggambarkan potret kehidupan pengemis itu sendiri, dari kedatangan ke kota dan kembalinya pengemis di daerah asalnya, hingga perilaku konsumsinya, juga sampai gambaran keadaan fatalistiknya.

This research aim to determine the background of people to choose become beggars and potraits to illustrated the lives of the beggars in the eastern district officials Purwokerto. The theory used is symbolic interactionist theory Herbert Blumer stating that human beings act to ward things on the basis of the meanings that the things have for them. That the meaning of such things is derived from, or arises out of the social interaction. That these meanings are handeld in, and modified trough, an interpretative process used by the person in the dealing with the things he encounters. Beside that the theory used is arranging decision, Soepranto stating that arranging decision is choose one alternative of all.This research used qualitative method with interactive analysis. The techniques that were used in taking the informants were purposive sampling, and snowball sampling. The data collecting technique used In-depth interview, passive observation, and documentation. There are the result of this study demonstrate the diversty of backgrounds of people choose the become beggars like, beggaring due to economics factor that not only stuck in the premier needs but also in ht secondary needs and thirdly needs wich are limited expertise.  It is also the most fundamental is the meaning in wich there and value factors are internalized by beggars and also judging about the halal beggaring and about the easy way to beggar. The background can also be illustrated through potraits of life, from arival to beg in the city and retrun to their home areas or the use of consumption behavior result also beg to state fatalistic picture.
