Analisis DInamika Fluida pada Reaktor Gasifier Downdraft Portabel Menggunakan Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
Abstrak (Bhs. Indonesia)

The increasing demand for energy in Indonesia is still accompanied by a high dependence on fossil fuels, creating a need to develop renewable energy sources that utilize local resources. Indonesia has substantial biomass potential that can be converted into energy through gasification technology. Gasification is a thermochemical biomass conversion process that produces synthesis gas (syngas) under limited air supply. In a downdraft gasifier, biomass undergoes drying, pyrolysis, oxidation, and reduction sequentially. Temperature, airflow, and pressure distributions are strongly affected by air velocity and reactor geometry; therefore, CFD is needed to analyze the flow and thermal characteristics inside the reactor. This study aimed to analyze the fluid dynamic characteristics inside the downdraft gasifier, investigate the effect of air velocity variations on temperature and pressure distributions inside the reactor, and validate the simulation results against experimentally measured temperature data. The simulation was performed using ANSYS Fluent 19.2 with a three-dimensional steady-state model. The Standard k–ε model was used to represent turbulence, while the energy equation and Species Transport model were applied to calculate heat transfer and the distribution of gasification products. The biomass domain was modeled as a porous zone with a porosity of 0,45, while volumetric reactions and energy sources were applied to represent the thermochemical processes occurring inside the reactor. The inlet air velocity variations were set at 0,5; 1,0; 1,5; and 2,0 m/s. The simulation results showed that variations in air velocity affected the temperature distribution, airflow characteristics, and pressure inside the reactor. The maximum temperatures obtained were 650,77 °C; 1.032,34 °C; 945,29 °C; and 779,24 °C at air velocities of 0,5; 1,0; 1,5; and 2,0 m/s, respectively. The highest maximum temperature was obtained at an air velocity of 1,0 m/s, whereas increasing the air velocity to 2,0 m/s resulted in a decrease in the maximum temperature. The highest airflow velocities were mainly observed around the inlet, throat, and outlet regions, with maximum values of 0,96; 2,18; 3,18; and 2,94 m/s, respectively. Increasing the air flow rate also increased the pressure loss, with the highest pressure drop of 650,96 Pa occurring at an air velocity of 2,0 m/s. These results indicate that changes in air velocity affect not only the flow pattern but also the thermal conditions inside the reactor. Validation was performed using temperature data obtained from four thermocouple locations representing the reduction zone (T1), oxidation zone (T2), pyrolysis zone (T3), and drying zone (T4). RMSE and MAPE were calculated separately for each measurement point. The validation results showed RMSE and MAPE values of 210,83 °C and 31,53% for T1, 89,72 °C and 14,79% for T2, 81,92 °C and 29,44% for T3, and 337,00 °C and 224,19% for T4, respectively. T2 showed the best agreement between the simulation and experimental results, while the largest deviation occurred at T4. These deviations were associated with the simplified representation of moisture evaporation in the drying zone, the representation of heterogeneous biomass reactions, the distribution of the energy source, and the difference between the steady-state simulation conditions and the transient nature of the experimental process. Overall, the CFD model was able to represent the temperature distribution and flow dynamics inside the reactor and demonstrated the influence of air velocity variations on the operating characteristics of the downdraft gasifier.
