Abstrak (Bhs. Indonesia)

Tesis ini berjudul Menghadapi Kematian dalam Novel Adam Silvera: They Both Die at the End (2017). Novel ini mengisahkan pengalaman dua tokoh utama, Rufus Emeterio dan Mateo Torrez, yang harus menghadapi kenyataan bahwa mereka hanya memiliki satu hari sebelum kematian mereka. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif untuk menganalisis data berupa kutipan-kutipan dari novel yang menggambarkan respons emosional dan perilaku tokoh utama dalam menghadapi kematian. Dalam menganalisis data, peneliti menekankan lima tahap, yaitu denial, anger, bargaining, depression, dan acceptance. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Rufus dan Mateo melewati semua tahapan tersebut tetapi tidak secara linear, sebaliknya, setiap proses tumpang tindih dan muncul kembali pada momen-momen tertentu, menunjukkan bahwa proses berduka tidak bersifat statis dalam tahapan-tahapan tertentu. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa kesadaran akan kematian yang bersifat pasti dan terikat waktu menempatkan kedua tokoh dalam kondisi psikologis yang kompleks sehingga novel ini merefleksikan pengalaman mereka dalam menghadapi kematian melalui respons emosional dan perilaku yang khas.

This thesis is titled Dealing with Death in Adam Silvera’s Novel They Both Die at the End (2017). This novel tells the story of the experiences of two main characters, Rufus Emeterio and Mateo Torrez, who must face the reality that they only have one day left before their death. This researcher uses a descriptive qualitative method to analyze data in the form of quotations from the novel that describe the emotional responses and behaviors of the main characters in facing death. In analyzing the data, the researcher applied Kübler-Ross's five stages of grief theory, namely denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. The results show that Rufus and Mateo go through all these stages, but not linearly, instead, each process overlaps and reappears at certain moments, indicating that the grieving process is not fixed in stages. Thus, it can be concluded that the awareness of death as something certain and time-bound places the two characters in a complex psychological state, so that the novel reflects their experiences in facing death through their unique emotional responses and behaviors.
