THE PORTRAYAL OF ANDREW LAEDDIS’ SCHIZOPHRENIA IN DENNIS LEHANE’S SHUTTER ISLAND

Penelitian berjudul “The Portrayal of Andrew Laeddis’s Schizophrenia in Dennis Lehane’s Shutter Island” ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan bagaimana pengarang menggambarkan schizophrenia dari Andrew Laeddis dalam novel Shutter Island oleh Dennis Lehane dilihat dari ciri-ciri dari schizophrenia dan unsur-unsur intrinsik. Dari hasil penelitian, penggambaran skizofrenia yang dialami oleh Andrew Laeddis digambarkan dalam positif dan negatif symptom yang dialami oleh Andrew Laeddis. Dalam postitif symptom, Andrew mengalami halusinasi, delusi, perkataan yang tidak tertata, kelakuan yang tidak tertata. Sedangkan untuk symptom negatifnya, Andrew mengalami blunted effects dan tiga A (anhedonia, alogia, avolition). Dalam novel ini, pengarang novel lebih banyak menggunakan positif symptom dalam menggambarkan skizofrenia yang dialami oleh Andrew Laeddis daripada negative symptom.

The research entitled “The Portrayal of Andrew Laeddis’ Schizophrenia in Dennis Lehane’s Shutter Island is aimed to explain how the author describes the schizophrenia of Andrew Laeddis seen from the symptoms and intrinsic aspects. From the research, the portrayal of Andrew Laeddis schizophrenia is described in positive and negative symptoms in Andrew Laeddis. In positive symptom Andrew experienced hallucinations delusions, disorganized speech, and disorganized behavior. While for the negative symptom, Andrew experienced the blunted effects and the three A (anhedonia, alogia, avolition). In Shutter Island, the author uses more positive symptoms for describing Andrew Laeddis’s Schizophrenia than the negative one.
