The Effect of IFRS 15 Adoption on Earnings Management in Real Estate Development Companies Listed on IDX (2020 - 2024): The Moderating Role of Audit Quality

Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kuantitatif yang dilakukan pada perusahaan real estate yang terdaftar di Bursa Efek Indonesia untuk menganalisis hubungan antara penerapan IFRS 15 yang diadopsi melalui PSAK 72 dan praktik manajemen laba. Industri real estate dipilih karena memiliki karakteristik pendapatan yang kompleks, seperti proyek jangka panjang, pengakuan pendapatan bertahap, dan variasi kontrak penjualan yang memerlukan pertimbangan signifikan dari manajemen maupun auditor. Kompleksitas ini menjadikan IFRS 15 relevan untuk dikaji, terutama pada periode awal implementasi ketika perusahaan masih beradaptasi. Penelitian ini berjudul “Pengaruh Penerapan IFRS 15 (PSAK 72) terhadap Manajemen Laba dengan Pengalaman Auditor dan Audit Report Lag sebagai Variabel Moderasi”. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menguji pengaruh penerapan IFRS 15 terhadap manajemen laba serta menilai apakah pengalaman auditor dan audit report lag dapat memoderasi hubungan tersebut. Secara teoretis, IFRS 15 bertujuan mengurangi fleksibilitas pengakuan pendapatan melalui pendekatan berbasis prinsip yang menekankan perpindahan kendali. Namun, efektivitas standar ini dapat berbeda pada setiap negara, terutama di pasar berkembang yang memiliki kondisi institusional dan tata kelola yang bervariasi. Populasi penelitian meliputi seluruh perusahaan real estate yang menerbitkan laporan keuangan tahunan selama periode 2020 - 2024. Sampel dipilih dengan teknik purposive sampling sehingga diperoleh 10 perusahaan dengan total 50 observasi. Data diperoleh dari laporan tahunan, laporan auditor independen, dan publikasi resmi BEI. Manajemen laba diukur menggunakan akrual diskresioner, sedangkan penerapan IFRS 15 diukur melalui indeks pengungkapan. Variabel pengalaman auditor dan audit report lag digunakan sebagai variabel moderasi. Analisis dilakukan menggunakan Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) penerapan IFRS 15 berpengaruh negatif dan tidak signifikan manajemen laba, (2) pengalaman auditor tidak memoderasi hubungan antara penerapan IFRS 15 dan manajemen laba, dan (3) audit report lag juga tidak memoderasi hubungan tersebut. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa implementasi PSAK 72 pada tahap awal belum cukup mampu menekan praktik manajemen laba di industri real estate. Implikasi penelitian menunjukkan bahwa efektivitas IFRS 15 tidak hanya ditentukan oleh adopsi formal standar, tetapi juga oleh kesiapan institusional, pemahaman entitas terhadap konsep “transfer of control” serta kualitas tata kelola dan kompetensi auditor. Selain menjadi masukan bagi regulator dan praktisi dalam meningkatkan kualitas pelaporan keuangan, temuan ini juga penting bagi investor karena mengindikasikan bahwa tingkat pengungkapan IFRS 15 belum dapat secara andal dijadikan indikator risiko manajemen laba. Penelitian ini memberikan kontribusi bagi literatur implementasi awal IFRS 15 di pasar berkembang serta membuka ruang bagi penelitian lanjutan pada periode yang lebih panjang.

This study employs a quantitative approach to examine how the implementation of IFRS 15, adopted in Indonesia through PSAK 72, relates to earnings management practices in real estate companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange. The real estate industry is chosen due to its complex revenue characteristics, including long-term projects, gradual revenue recognition, and diverse contractual arrangements that require substantial managerial and auditing judgment. These conditions make IFRS 15 particularly relevant to investigate, especially during its early adoption stage. Accordingly, this study is titled “The Effect of IFRS 15 (PSAK 72) Adoption on Earnings Management with Auditor Experience and Audit Report Lag as Moderating Variables”. The purpose of this research is to assess the extent to which IFRS 15 adoption influences earnings management and to determine whether auditor experience and audit report lag moderate this relationship. Theoretically, IFRS 15 aims to reduce managerial discretion in revenue recognition by introducing a principle-based approach centered on the transfer of control. However, the effectiveness of this standard may vary across countries, particularly in emerging markets where institutional readiness and governance structures differ. The research population consists of real estate companies that issued complete annual reports from 2020 to 2024. Using purposive sampling, ten companies were selected, yielding a total of fifty observations. Earnings management was measured using discretionary accruals, while IFRS 15 adoption was assessed through a disclosure index. Auditor experience and audit report lag served as moderating variables, and data were analyzed using Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA). The results of the study show that (1) IFRS 15 adoption exhibits a negative direction toward earnings management but is not statistically significant, (2) auditor experience demonstrates a positive direction but does not significantly moderate the relationship between IFRS 15 adoption and earnings management, and (3) audit report lag exhibits a positive direction but does not significantly moderate the relationship between IFRS 15 adoption and earnings management. These findings indicate that the early implementation of PSAK 72 has not been sufficient to curb earnings management practices within the real estate industry. The implications of these findings suggest that the effectiveness of IFRS 15 depends not only on the formal adoption of the standard but also on institutional readiness, the entity’s understanding of the transfer-of-control concept, and the quality of corporate governance and auditor competence. Beyond informing regulators and practitioners seeking to improve financial reporting transparency, the results are also important for investors, as IFRS 15 disclosure levels cannot yet be considered a reliable indicator of earnings management risk. This study contributes to the growing literature on IFRS 15 implementation in emerging markets and provides a foundation for future research involving longer observation periods or additional governance-related variables.
