ANALYZING STUDENTS’ ERRORS IN USING SIMPLE PAST TENSE IN WRITING RECOUNT TEXT (A Case Study in 8th of MTs Ma’arif NU 4 Kemranjen, Banyumas)

Penelitian yang berjudul “Analyzing Students’ Errors in Using Simple Past Tense in Writing Recount Text (A Case Study in 8th Grade of MTs Ma’arif NU 4 Kemranjen, Banyumas)” bertujuan untuk (1) mengetahui kesalahan apa yang dihadapi oleh siswa dalam menggunakan simple past tense dalam teks recount, (2) mengetahui faktor penyebab kesalahan yang dilakukan siswa dalam menggunakan simple past tense dalam teks recount, (3) untuk mengetahui penyebab kesalahan dari faktor-faktor tersebut menurut siswa dan guru. Kata kunci: Analisis kesalahan, Past Tense, Penulisan teks recount. Peneliti menggunakan teori Dulay untuk mengidentifikasi jenis-jenis kesalahan. Sementara itu, untuk mengetahui faktor-faktor penyebab kesalahan itu, peneliti menggunakan teori Jack C. Richard. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode expost facto. Data diambil dari tatal sampling. Data-data yang dikumpulkan diambil dari tes siswa, interview dan dokumentasi. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dari tanggal 24 Oktober sampai 9 November 2012. Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini adalah (1) ada 3 jenis kesalahan yang dilakukan siswa, meliputi 37 kesalahan pengurangan (27%), 46 kesalahan penambahan (34%) dan 54 kesalahan misformasi (39%), (2) ada 2 faktor penyebab kesalahan siswa yaitu faktor interlingual dan intralingual. Interlingual ada 37 kesalahan (33%) dan intralingual ada 74 kesalahan(67%), (3) menurut pandangan guru, causal factor terjadi karena siswa masih dipengaruhi oleh bahasa pertama yaitu Indonesia dalam menggunakan bahasa sasaran/bahasa asing (Inggris) dan mereka juga tidak memperhatikan penjelasan guru terutama materi teks recount dan simple past tense. Sedangkan menurut pandangan siswa, causal factor terjadi karena mereka berfikir bahwa pola dari bahasa pertama (Indonesia) dapat diterapkan dalam bahasa sasaran/ bahasa asing. Siswa mencoba mentransfer aturan-aturan dari bahasa pertama mereka ke bahasa sasaran dan mereka juga kurang paham dengan materi pelajaran yang ada. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberi manfaat bagi para mahasiswa dan dapat digunakan sebagai referensi bagi mereka yang tertarik untuk melakukan penelitian dalam bidang linguistik terapan.

The thesis entitled “Analyzing Students’ Errors in Using Simple Past Tense in Writing Recount Text (A Case Study in 8th Grade of MTs Ma’arif NU 4 Kemranjen, Banyumas)” is aimed at (1) finding out the errors are encountered by the students in using simple past tense in writing recount text; (2) finding out the factors influencing the students’ fault in using simple past tense in writing recount text; (3) finding out the causes of those factors occuring according to the students as well as teacher. Keyword: Error Analysis, Past Tense, Writing recount text. The resercher applied Dulay’s theory to identify the kinds of errors. Meanwhile, in finding the causal factors of errors the theory from Jack C. Richard is used. This research used expost facto method. The data were taken using total sampling. The data were collected by taking the students’ writing recount text, interview and documentation. The research was conducted from 24 October – 9 November 2012. The conclusions of this research were: (1) there were three types of errors made by the students. Those were 37 omission errors (27%), 46 addition errors (34%) and the last 54 misformation errors (39%). (2) there were two causal factors of students’ error, namely interlingual and intralingual. The students made 37 errors (33%) in interlingual errors and 74 errors (67%) in intralingual. (3) From the teacher’s perspective, the causal factors happened because the students were still affected by their first language (Indonesian) in using target language (English) and also they did not pay attention to the teacher’s explanation especially in recount text and past tense materials. From the students’ perspective, the causal factors happened because they thought that the pattern of their mother tongue could be applied in target language. The students tried to transfer rules from their mother tongue to the target language and also they did not understand the materials well. This research is expected that the results can give benefit to students and can be used as the reference for the other researchers who are interested in conducting the research in the field of applied linguistic.
