A Stylistic Analysis of Jerry Seinfeld's Stand-up Comedy Special Show "23 Hours to Kill" on Netflix

Nowadays, contemporary culture has already spread around the world with its positive and negative effects. One of the most kind famous contemporary cultures in Indonesia is stand-up comedy. This research has two objectives: to find the types and the functions of figures of speech in Jerry Seinfeld’s Stand-up Comedy Special Show “23 Hours to Kill” material. The method used in this thesis was descriptive qualitative method and total sampling was used to answer the research questions. The data source used in this research was from Netflix streaming app (https://www.netflix.com/id/title/80170847). The data were the utterances from Seinfeld’s material that carry figures of speech. The theory used in this thesis is Perrine and Arp’s theory “Sound and Sense”: An Introduction to Poetry (2010). The result shows there were 37 data of figures of speech in Seinfeld’s material and six of twelve types of figures of speech applied in this research, they were overstatement (16 data), simile (10 data), metaphor (5 data), personification (3 data), understatement (1 datum), and verbal irony (1 datum). The functions of figures of speech found in the utterances are to give imaginative pleasure (27 data), to say much in brief compass (7 data), to add an emotional intensity (4 data), and to bring an additional imagery (1 datum). From the data the researcher conclude that the use of figures of speech and its functions made Seinfeld’s material more interesting and easy to understand by the audiences because the messages sounds lighter and more enjoyable.
